Hubstaff receives positive overall ratings on G2 and Capterra, with many focused on its ease of use: **4.4/5 on G2** (2,338+ reviews) and **4.5/5 on Capterra** (1,615 reviews). It also scores an impressive **9.4/10 on TrustRadius**, but the rating is based on just 77 reviews, none more recent than January 2025. Trustpilot has an incredibly low overall score of **1.9/5** (495 reviews), but those reviews tend to center on support and billing complaints rather than criticism of the platform’s functionality.

Hubstaff is an employee productivity platform that’s a good fit for businesses that need detailed [employee monitoring](https://www.timecamp.com/blog/best-employee-monitoring-software/)
or want to connect tracked hours with contractor payments. But for teams primarily interested in recording billable time, **Hubstaff’s monitoring features don’t always justify the additional cost**. And they can be overkill for workers who feel uncomfortable with the screenshots and productivity surveillance that are part and parcel of this solution.

To get to the heart of the platform, I’ve examined feedback from scores of customers on G2, Capterra, Trustpilot, and TrustRadius to understand where the software performs well and where problems tend to crop up. While it’s a popular and user-friendly platform, perhaps the main theme of this Hubstaff review is to **consider its level of oversight**. Is it worth the additional cost or could it deliver true value to your team?

| Key takeaways Hubstaff receives positive overall ratings on G2 and Capterra, with many focused on its ease of use. Screenshots and activity monitoring are among its biggest selling points for managers overseeing remote teams. GPS location tracking gives businesses with field-based employees another reason to consider the platform. Timesheets and payroll integrations help businesses manage hourly contractors. Employee privacy is a significant concern, especially when organizations use screenshots or activity percentages to judge performance. Some reviewers question the accuracy of activity measurements and report problems with idle-time detection. Hubstaff is a stronger fit for businesses that actively want employee monitoring than for teams that prefer a less intrusive time tracking app. |

## How do users rate Hubstaff in 2026?

Here’s an at-a-glance look at the Hubstaff platform and reviews across G2, Capterra, Trustpilot, and TrustRadius.

| TrustRadius sub-scores | Usability: 8.7/10, based on three ratings |
| Starting price | $4.99 per seat/month, billed annually, or $7 per seat/month billed monthly. Two-seat minimum. 14-day free trial available. |
| Best known for | Employee monitoring with screenshots and activity tracking, alongside time tracking for remote teams. Also offers GPS tracking for field employees, timesheets and payroll integrations. |

**Hubstaff’s strongest overall ratings come from G2 and Capterra**, where it’s attracted thousands of reviews. The ratings suggest that Hubstaff delivers on its central promise: helping businesses understand how employees spend their working hours. Beyond numerical scores, the written reviews provide a detailed, more complicated picture of how employees feel about that visibility.

| How do we review software in TimeCamp? A human is behind every word posted here. Our team spends real hours researching software, checking product claims against current documentation and examining customer feedback. We’ve been writing about SaaS for 10+ years, and use many of the tools we cover in our own work. Our editorial rule is simple: do not cover without a source. For this Hubstaff review, I signed up for its 14-day free trial in November 2026 and examined more than 90 customer reviews across G2 and Capterra, including feedback I ultimately excluded from the article. I prioritized recent feedback about Hubstaff’s time tracking features and looked for recurring themes across different ratings rather than relying on isolated complaints. I also checked pricing, plan restrictions and monitoring capabilities against Hubstaff’s published documentation. While I also read reviews on TrustRadius, they require caution. Although Hubstaff scores an impressive 9.4/10 with the TrustRadius user base, the rating is based on just 77 reviews, none more recent than January 2025 and many of them incentivized. Its usability score of 8.7/10 is based on only three ratings. Similarly, Trustpilot has an incredibly low overall score of 1.9/5. Although the sample of 495 reviews is much larger than TrustRadius, they tend to center on support and billing complaints rather than criticism of the platform’s functionality. I included them in my review for completeness, but I relied more heavily on G2 and Capterra when identifying recurring themes. Every quoted review includes the contributor’s displayed name or nickname, the platform, and its publication date. And we revisit our reviews when notable features or pricing change, at least once per quarter. Read more → How do we create content and review software in TimeCamp? |

## What do users like about Hubstaff?

I’ve looked through Hubstaff reviews on G2 and Capterra to see which features earn the most praise. **Ease of use comes up repeatedly**, alongside the visibility Hubstaff gives managers into their teams’ work. Its reporting tools build on that visibility, helping businesses make better use of the hours and data they’ve tracked. Here’s what reviewers like most, in rough order of how often the theme comes up.

### Hubstaff is easy to set up and use

Hubstaff earns high marks for usability, with G2 users rating it **9.0/10 for ease of use** and **9.1/10 for ease of setup**. Capterra users give it **4.4/5 for ease of use**. Reviewers appreciate how quickly you can jump in and use the straightforward interface to start tracking your time. And there are several different places you can track it from, including a browser, Chrome extension, desktop app, and your mobile device.

> *What I like best about Hubstaff is how easy it is to track my time without it getting in the way of my work. I just start the timer when I begin a task, and it runs quietly in the background.*

![a screenshot of a g2 hubstaff review by taimoor a.](https://www.timecamp.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/11/hubstaff-reviews-g2-review-taimoor-a.png)Taimoor A., a Web Developer at a small business, rated Hubstaff 5/5 on G2 and praised its straightforward time tracking, although he reported problems with idle detection. Author’s screenshot, November 2026.

As a bonus, being able to track time across time zones is especially useful for distributed teams. Employees and managers can check the same timesheet from different countries, without performing any complicated time tracking conversions.

> *It’s very easy to see my hours in either my own time zone or my organization’s, and the navigation to different types of views is really obvious.*

> **Faye D.**, AI Trainer and Content Writer/Editor, G2, September 8, 2026, 3.5/5

### Screenshots and activity monitoring give managers greater visibility

Hubstaff’s workforce analytics features are a major selling point for businesses managing remote employees.

![hubstaff activity monitoring dashboard with work hours, average activity, idle time, and screenshot previews](https://www.timecamp.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/11/hubstaff-reviews-activity-dashboard.png)Hubstaff’s activity monitoring dashboard showing employee work hours, average activity percentage, idle time, and daily screenshot previews. Author’s screenshot, November 2026.

Managers can **capture screenshots (with an optional blur setting)**, review app and website usage, and [monitor activity levels](https://www.timecamp.com/time-tracking/activity-monitoring/)
alongside recorded hours. The result is a detailed view of how employees spend their working day without relying entirely on timesheets.

> *Features like automatic time tracking, detailed activity reports, and project-based tracking support transparency without adding extra administrative work.*
>
> **Amro A.**, Customer Support, G2, June 17, 2026, 5/5

![a screenshot of a g2 hubstaff review by amro a.](https://www.timecamp.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/11/hubstaff-reviews-g2-review-amro-a.png)Amro A., a Customer Support professional at a small business, gave Hubstaff 5/5 on G2 and praised its time tracking and productivity reporting for remote teams. Author’s screenshot, November 2026.

Project-based tracking is useful for agencies managing multiple clients. Rather than just knowing how many hours someone worked (and when), **managers can see which projects those hours were allocated to**.

> *We started using Hubstaff after a period of all in office work. Making the transition to partially remote made us nervous, but the visibility that Hubstaff offers made it incredibly easy to know exactly how much time each team member was spending on each of our client projects.*
>
> **Holly P.**, International Coordinator, G2, September 8, 2026, 5/5

![a screenshot of a g2 hubstaff review by holly p.](https://www.timecamp.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/11/hubstaff-reviews-g2-review-holly-p.png)Holly P., an International Coordinator at a small business, rated Hubstaff 5/5 on G2 and praised the visibility it provides into time spent on client projects. Author’s screenshot, November 2026.

I can see why Hubstaff appeals to managers who are accustomed to having their teams in the office. It’s reassuring, especially if your business needs to account for time spent on client projects. But before you dive in and start monitoring every morsel of work, consider whether your team needs this degree of monitoring or if straightforward time tracking would do the trick.

##### Time tracking, minus surveillance

TimeCamp keeps screenshots and activity monitoring optional and switched off by default, so you can track hours without watching every click.

### Reporting tools help managers make better use of tracked hours

Hubstaff offers 23 [built-in reports](https://www.timecamp.com/time-tracking/reporting/)
covering everything from employee activity to project budgets and expenses. Managers can use filters to narrow down the information, making it easier to identify opportunities to improve operational efficiency.

> *I particularly like the timesheets and reporting features. It gives me a better understanding of how the team is working and helps me pick up on any issues early. It’s a really useful tool for managing our day-to-day operations.*
>
> **Wayne W.**, Director of HR & Talent Development, G2, October 12, 2026, 5/5

![a screenshot of a g2 hubstaff review by wayne w.](https://www.timecamp.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/11/hubstaff-reviews-g2-review-wayne-w.png)Wayne W., a Director of HR & Talent Development at a small business, gave Hubstaff 5/5 on G2 and highlighted how its timesheets and reporting features simplify payroll preparation. Author’s screenshot, November 2026.

For businesses managing hourly workers, having timesheets and reporting in one place reduces the need to pull information together from separate systems. The reports can also help managers spot those slog projects that are consuming more hours than expected.

> *I also find the reporting tools especially helpful for keeping an eye on project progress, balancing workloads, and strengthening team accountability.*
>
> **Amro A.**, Customer Support, G2, June 17, 2026, 5/5

To keep a closer eye on the numbers, managers can also **set project budgets based on tracked hours**, with optional automated alerts when the allocated limit is approaching.

![hubstaff project budget settings with a 25-hour limit and automated notifications](https://www.timecamp.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/11/hubstaff-reviews-project-budget.png)Hubstaff’s project budget settings showing a 25-hour limit, optional automated notifications, and controls to stop timers when the budget is reached. Author’s screenshot, November 2026.

Hubstaff’s reporting capabilities are valuable for agencies that need to account for billable hours across multiple clients. Before you choose a plan, it’s worth checking whether the platform’s built-in reports give you the breakdowns you need. **Advanced reporting is restricted to higher tiers**, so always check what you’ll get for your money.

### GPS tracking helps businesses manage field-based employees

Hubstaff’s **mobile GPS tracking** allows businesses to record time and location data for field-based staff, while [geofencing](https://www.timecamp.com/time-tracking/geofencing/)
helps manage attendance at specific job sites. These features are great for companies whose employees move between locations throughout the day and it’s impractical to rely on them accurately reporting their hours when they’re on the move.

> *The GPS tracking for field based team members was a specific win, job site hours that used to be self reported and occasionally inconsistent became verifiable without any awkward conversations.*
>
> **Crispin W.**, Director of E-Commerce and Digital Strategy, Capterra, June 14, 2026, 4/5

![a screenshot of a capterra hubstaff review by crispin w.](https://www.timecamp.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/11/hubstaff-reviews-capterra-review-crispin-w.png)Crispin’s 4/5 Capterra review, praising Hubstaff’s GPS tracking for field-based employees and noting concerns about intrusive screenshot monitoring. Author’s screenshot, November 2026.

Another reviewer highlights the value of combining location data with other time-tracking features:

> *Simple desktop and mobile timers make clocking-in straightforward. Automated screenshots, activity scores, and GPS location features make payroll and proof-of-work clear for managers.*
>
> **James M.**, Billing, Capterra, September 15, 2026, 5/5

![a screenshot of a capterra hubstaff review by james m.](https://www.timecamp.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/11/hubstaff-reviews-capterra-review-james-m.png)Capterra review from a billing team member, rated 5/5, praising Hubstaff’s time tracking, screenshots, activity scores, and GPS features. Author’s screenshot, November 2026.

GPS tracking gives Hubstaff an advantage for businesses with a mix of remote and field-based employees. Both groups can use the same time-tracking system, even though their working arrangements are very different. Before subscribing, check whether your chosen plan includes the location features you need, especially if geofencing is a priority.

### Scheduling and attendance features help managers organize shifts

Hubstaff offers scheduling features that allow managers to assign shifts and compare planned hours with attendance. Managers also receive updates about missed or late shifts, which is useful when coordinating employees across different working patterns.

> *I use Hubstaff in HR to add schedules for employees, track time, and take screenshots while working remotely.*
>
> **Morissa F.**, Human Resources Manager, G2, April 22, 2026, 5/5

![a screenshot of a g2 hubstaff review by morissa f.](https://www.timecamp.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/11/hubstaff-reviews-g2-review-morissa-f.png)Morissa F., an HR Manager, rates Hubstaff 5/5 on G2, praising its employee scheduling and time tracking features while describing difficulties with finance settings. Author’s screenshot, November 2026.

Several Hubstaff attendance tracking reviews also highlight scheduling as a key strength:

> *I also really like the smart notifications, along with the real-time shift and schedule tracking.*
>
> **Kate**, Account Manager, G2, May 16, 2026, 5/5

![a screenshot of a g2 hubstaff review by kate](https://www.timecamp.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/11/hubstaff-reviews-g2-review-kate.png)Kate, an Account Manager at a small business, rated Hubstaff 5/5 on G2 and praised its smart notifications and real-time shift scheduling, while noting occasional bugs. Author’s screenshot, November 2026.

Hubstaff’s scheduling tools could be useful if you’re currently organizing shifts in a spreadsheet and tracking attendance somewhere else. Keeping schedules connected to recorded hours makes it easier to investigate missed shifts without comparing separate records. **Scheduling is available from the Team plan**, so businesses interested in this feature will need to look beyond Hubstaff’s entry-level pricing. The Team plan also includes time-off management, which is worth checking if you’re evaluating Hubstaff for PTO tracking alongside [employee attendance](https://www.timecamp.com/time-tracking/attendance/)
.

### Payroll features simplify payments to hourly workers

Hubstaff connects tracked hours with payroll, allowing businesses to calculate payments straight from [approved timesheets](https://www.timecamp.com/time-tracking/rapid-timesheet-approvals/)
. The platform supports payment integrations including **Wise, PayPal, Payoneer, and Gusto**, which is vital for companies paying freelancers or international workers. Managers can spend less time transferring hours between systems, both in preparing and processing payments.

> *I really love the payroll feature of Hubstaff. It’s been a huge time and cost saver for our company, especially since we work with employees in over 10 countries. Before Hubstaff, we had to do payroll manually, which was time-consuming and prone to human error. The payroll integration makes the process so much easier and simpler as we have grown.*
>
> **Daynia M.**, Board Member, G2, March 2026, 4.5/5

![a screenshot of a g2 hubstaff review by daynia m.](https://www.timecamp.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/11/hubstaff-reviews-g2-review-daynia-m.png)Daynia M., a Board Member at a small business, rated Hubstaff 4.5/5 on G2 and praised its payroll integration for saving time and reducing manual work when paying employees across more than 10 countries. Author’s screenshot, November 2026.

Hubstaff makes a strong case for businesses that pay people according to tracked hours. I’d check which payment providers are supported before subscribing, especially if your international contractors use a certain platform. **Full payroll functionality is included from the Team plan**, so it’s worth comparing the cost of that tier against the limited payment features available on the Starter and Grow plans.

## What do users struggle with in Hubstaff?

Hubstaff’s pros and cons are closely connected: **its monitoring capabilities are a major reason businesses choose the platform, but they’re also responsible for some of its strongest criticism**.

Reviewers raise concerns about how the platform measures their employee activity, while others point to the cost of accessing more advanced features. Here are the main complaints to consider before subscribing.

### Employee monitoring can feel intrusive

Several Hubstaff employee monitoring software reviews reveal concerns about screenshots and activity tracking, which can make employees feel they’re being watched throughout the working day. This can be uncomfortable for people whose jobs involve research or creative work, where productivity isn’t always visible through mouse movements or the websites they visit.

> *My absolute #1 issue is that I’m not a fan—understatement—of screenshot software or “smart” URL/app-based auto-productivity assessment. If, halfway through a work session, Hubstaff captures sensitive information like passwords via screenshot, or I have to quickly reply to an email involving my medical history in the middle of a task, that information is exposed to my managers and potentially to Hubstaff staff.*
>
> **Faye D.**, AI Trainer and Content Writer/Editor, G2, September 8, 2026, 3.5/5

![a screenshot of a g2 hubstaff review by faye d.](https://www.timecamp.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/11/hubstaff-reviews-g2-review-faye-d.png)Faye D., an AI Trainer and Content Writer/Editor at a mid-sized business, rated Hubstaff 3.5/5 on G2 and raised privacy concerns about screenshots and employee activity monitoring. Author’s screenshot, November 2026.

And managers aren’t necessarily enthusiastic about every monitoring feature either.

> *One drawback of Hubstaff is that some of its employee monitoring features can feel a bit intrusive, particularly for teams that place a high value on autonomy.*
>
> **Amro A.**, Customer Support, G2, June 17, 2026, 5/5

Hubstaff offers privacy safeguards, including **screenshot encryption and the option to blur screenshots**. It doesn’t record keystrokes, and the company reports SOC 2 compliance. These are useful protections, but they won’t necessarily address employees’ objections to being monitored in the first place.

Before introducing Hubstaff, consider which monitoring features your business needs. It’s also worth discussing the settings with employees beforehand, if they’re accustomed to working independently without their computer activity being recorded.

### Activity percentages don’t always reflect productive work

Hubstaff calculates activity levels using keyboard and mouse interactions, but **those measurements don’t necessarily reflect how much work someone is completing**. An employee reading a document or reviewing a design might be productive without generating much activity. Hubstaff’s own documentation also acknowledges that touchpads can register lower activity than a mouse.

| One recurring concern in Hubstaff productivity tracker reviews is that idle detection can interrupt legitimate work. If this happens, workers may need to restore time manually if the timer stops while they’re reading or reviewing work. |
| --- |

> *Sometimes the idle detection stops the timer while I’m still working, for example when I’m reading a task, reviewing designs or checking pages on another screen. I then have to add that time back manually.*
>
> **Taimoor A.**, Web Developer, G2, October 8, 2026, 5/5

> *Sometimes it doesn’t track my working hours accurately, like I might notice thirty minutes or even an hour missing, which feels like it’s a system malfunction or something.*
>
> **Mercy I.**, G2, October 3, 2026, 4/5

![a screenshot of a g2 hubstaff review by mercy i.](https://www.timecamp.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/11/hubstaff-reviews-g2-review-mercy-i.png)Mercy I., a Customer Support Specialist at a mid-sized business, rated Hubstaff 4/5 on G2 and reported occasional missing working hours despite appreciating its time tracking features. Author’s screenshot, November 2026.

Hubstaff’s activity percentages are **best treated as just one indicator of working patterns rather than a performance score**. This is especially important for knowledge workers, whose most valuable work may involve relatively little keyboard or mouse activity. Managers should consider the work employees complete before drawing conclusions from their activity percentages. I’d test a complete working week before rolling Hubstaff out to hourly employees. Check how the platform handles interrupted timers and manual corrections, in particular, when those hours will determine someone’s pay.

### Per-seat pricing can become expensive

| Hubstaff charges per user, with a two-seat minimum. Its Starter plan costs $4.99 per seat per month when billed annually, but businesses that need features like scheduling, time-off management or payroll must move up to the more expensive Team plan. |
| --- |

> *Pricing can feel high for small teams.*
>
> **Osama**, Full Stack Developer, Capterra, January 24, 2026, 5/5

![a screenshot of a capterra hubstaff review by osama](https://www.timecamp.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/11/hubstaff-reviews-capterra-review-osama.png)Osama’s 5/5 Capterra review, praising Hubstaff’s time tracking and reporting while noting that pricing can be expensive for small teams. Author’s screenshot, November 2026.

You’re also likely to feel the pinch as your headcount grows. For example, a 20-person team would pay $99.80 per month on Starter or $200 per month on Team, based on annual billing rates. **That’s a difference of $1,202.40 over a year.**

**Tip**: Always calculate your subscription costs using the lowest plan that includes all your required features. You may not need the functionality of a higher tier.

##### Free for unlimited users

TimeCamp’s free plan covers your whole team, so a growing headcount doesn’t raise your bill just to track hours.

[Start for free](https://app.timecamp.com/auth/register)

### Support and billing arrangements can be problematic

Hubstaff’s support options depend on your subscription, with **VIP support reserved for Enterprise customers and chat support only available from the Team plan**. Some reviewers also report difficulties with billing arrangements when they want to add flexible users.

> *Hubstaff’s interface allows you to “Add a user” without clearly stating that this creates a paid recurring seat. Viewer-only users and temporary workers also triggered charges, with no confirmation screen or billing-change email.*
>
> **Josh**, Trustpilot, January 2026, 1/5

![a screenshot of a trustpilot hubstaff review by josh](https://www.timecamp.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/11/hubstaff-reviews-trustpilot-review-josh.png)Josh gave Hubstaff 1/5 on Trustpilot in January 2026 and criticized its seat-based billing arrangements, particularly charges associated with adding users. Author’s screenshot, November 2026.

| Annual subscriptions are worth examining carefully, especially if you’re unsure how many employees will need access throughout the year. Some customers have reported difficulties switching from annual to monthly billing, so it’s worth checking the plan-change and cancellation terms before committing. |
| --- |

> *We requested a change to a month-to-month pricing structure while we look for a better platform. They assured me this had been done on their end, and nothing was needed from me. 1 week later, upon my renewal date, I was charged for the whole year. When asking for compensation for this discrepancy, they basically just said no … Not impressed, will be cancelling.*

![a screenshot of a trustpilot hubstaff review by jessica](https://www.timecamp.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/11/hubstaff-reviews-trustpilot-review-jessica.png)Jessica’s 1/5 Trustpilot review, criticizing Hubstaff’s usability and describing a billing dispute involving an unexpected annual renewal charge. Author’s screenshot, November 2026.

I’d also recommend using the 14-day trial to test Hubstaff’s support responsiveness alongside its features. Smaller businesses may find it frustrating to discover that their preferred support channel isn’t available on their plan.

### Invoicing and integrations may not cover every workflow

Hubstaff supports client invoicing and integrations with popular business software, but **its invoicing system has limitations**. Although it’s possible to use tracked time to generate invoice line items, businesses may still need additional steps to transfer invoices into their accounting software.

Some reviewers also point to missing integrations, including payment processing options such as **Stripe and Square**. These limitations are relevant for businesses with well-established billing workflows.

Hubstaff offers integrations with accounting platforms such as [QuickBooks](https://www.timecamp.com/integrations/quickbooks-time-tracking/)
, but it’s important to check exactly what information transfers between systems. A supported integration doesn’t necessarily mean every step of your invoicing process will be automated.

> *The integration stack needs some serious improvements when it comes to pushing data into QuickBooks/Salesforce. There are many gaps in functionality that create tedious manual work items for our team.*

> **Jay**, Capterra, May 30, 2025, 3/5

![a screenshot of a capterra hubstaff review by jay](https://www.timecamp.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/11/hubstaff-reviews-capterra-review-jay.png)Jay, a Head of Customer Success at a mid-sized business, gave Hubstaff 3/5 on Capterra and criticized gaps in its QuickBooks and Salesforce integrations that create additional manual work. Author’s screenshot, November 2026.

A great tip is to test your usual billing process during the trial, from recording time through to sending an invoice. If you need to transfer information into another system, check that step carefully rather than assuming an integration will handle it.

### The mobile app offers fewer features than the web version

| Hubstaff’s mobile app is handy for recording hours away from a desk, but it doesn’t provide the same reporting depth as the web platform. Mobile users can access Weekly and Time & Activities reports, while more detailed reporting requires the web version. Some users note that the mobile experience is less polished. |
| --- |

> *The mobile app could also be improved slightly to make navigation smoother and more user-friendly.*

> **Portia**, Nurse, Capterra, May 9, 2026, 5/5

![a screenshot of a capterra hubstaff review by portia](https://www.timecamp.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/11/hubstaff-reviews-capterra-review-portia.png)Portia, a nurse at a mid-sized business, rated Hubstaff 5/5 on Capterra and praised its straightforward time tracking, while suggesting improvements to mobile app navigation. Author’s screenshot, November 2026.

Hubstaff’s mobile app should be sufficient for employees who primarily need to clock in and record their location. But managers who expect to review detailed reports from their phones may find the experience more restrictive.

## Who is Hubstaff a good fit for?

Alongside considering all the various Hubstaff pros and cons, it’s also important to think about *who*you need to use the platform.

| Profile | What they use it for | Why it fits |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Remote and distributed teams | Tracking working hours, reviewing screenshots and monitoring employee activity across locations. | Gives managers visibility into remote work, with straightforward time tracking and reporting. Best for teams comfortable with employee monitoring. |
| Field and mobile crews | GPS time tracking, geofencing and recording attendance at job sites. | Helps managers verify hours worked at different locations without relying entirely on self-reported timesheets. |
| Agencies paying hourly contractors | Tracking billable hours by project, approving timesheets and paying contractors through payroll integrations. | Connects project time tracking with payments through providers such as Wise and PayPal, reducing manual payroll administration. |

## Where do reviewers suggest looking elsewhere?

Hubstaff earns plenty of praise for its time tracking and monitoring capabilities, but some of those same features make it a poor fit for certain teams. Based on the reviews, I’d consider looking elsewhere if:

- **Your employees are uncomfortable with monitoring.**Screenshots and app activity tracking can create friction in workplaces where employees are accustomed to greater autonomy. If your team already has reservations, introducing Hubstaff could be a difficult sell.
- **Your team does a lot of work *away*from the keyboard.**Research, reading and meetings don’t always generate high activity percentages. If managers rely too heavily on those scores, employees could find themselves having to justify perfectly productive working hours.
- **You’re watching your subscription costs.** Hubstaff’s per-seat pricing can eat into your budget as your team grows, especially when you need more advanced features on the Team plan rather than Starter.
- **You have specific invoicing or payment requirements**. Hubstaff can generate invoices from tracked time, but you should check how those invoices work with your accounting software and whether your preferred payment process is supported.
- **Your working hours are difficult to predict.** Complaints about interrupted timers and restrictions on future-dated entries make Hubstaff worth testing carefully if your employees work irregular hours or frequently correct their timesheets.
- **You need flexibility with your subscription.**If your headcount changes regularly, check Hubstaff’s annual billing terms and the options for switching plans before committing.

### When TimeCamp is worth considering

If several of those concerns strike a chord, TimeCamp is worth considering as a less monitoring-focused alternative. **Its free plan supports unlimited users**, while screenshots and activity monitoring are strictly optional. They’re **switched off by default** and controlled by administrators if you do choose to use them. These features make it entirely possible for teams to track working hours without making employee surveillance central to their approach.

TimeCamp supports [invoicing](https://www.timecamp.com/time-tracking/invoicing/)
from the Starter plan upward, while billable-time tracking and project profitability features require Premium. Field teams can use GPS tracking through the mobile app on all plans, with geofencing available on Enterprise.

While Hubstaff might still be a decent fit if your business needs in-depth employee monitoring features, many teams will find it overkill. Your best bet is to make use of the 14-day trial to check how the software fits your working arrangements before committing. ## FAQs about Hubstaff

### Is Hubstaff good?

Yes, Hubstaff has strong overall ratings on G2 and Capterra, with reviewers frequently praising its ease of use and employee monitoring features. It’s useful for businesses managing remote workers or hourly contractors. But some users dislike the monitoring and report problems with activity accuracy, so its suitability will depend entirely on how your team works.

### Is Hubstaff worth it in 2026?

Hubstaff is likely to offer the best value for remote teams that need detailed employee monitoring, or field-based businesses that benefit from GPS tracking and location-based timesheets. Agencies managing hourly contractors may also find its payroll features worth the subscription cost. For small teams that only need to record working hours, Hubstaff’s per-user pricing may be harder to justify if the features they need are restricted to higher-tier plans.

### What do users complain about most in Hubstaff?

Employee monitoring and privacy concerns are prominent complaints in the reviews I looked at. Some users are also concerned about the match between the work they completed and the activity percentages reported. Other criticisms include idle-time detection and reporting limitations. Of course, the severity of these problems may depend on the monitoring settings and how managers interpret the recorded information.

### Does Hubstaff feel like surveillance to employees?

Yes, it can. Some employees describe Hubstaff’s screenshots and activity monitoring as intrusive; in contrast, some managers appreciate the additional visibility. Hubstaff offers controls over monitoring, but employees may still object to having their computer activity recorded. As a rule of thumb, organizations should clearly explain what information they collect and why before introducing the software.

### Is Hubstaff accurate at tracking productivity?

Hubstaff can record computer activity, but its activity percentages shouldn’t be treated as a complete measure of employee productivity. Reading documents or attending calls may involve little keyboard or mouse movement. Managers should interpret activity information alongside the work employees complete rather than judging performance using percentages alone.

### How much does Hubstaff really cost?

Hubstaff starts at $4.99 per seat/month with annual billing, or $7 with monthly billing, with a two-seat minimum. Grow costs $7.50-9 per seat/month, while Team costs $10-12 per seat/month. Features are restricted by tier: advanced reporting starts with Grow, while payments and scheduling require Team. Enterprise costs $25 per seat/month, billed annually.

### Does Hubstaff have a free plan?

No, Hubstaff doesn’t currently offer a permanent free plan. It provides a 14-day free trial so teams can explore its features before subscribing. Paid plans start at $4.99 per seat/month with annual billing, or $7 with monthly billing. A two-seat minimum applies, so even solo users must pay for at least two seats.
