Looking for a Timely app alternative? TimeCamp, DeskTime, RescueTime, and ActivTrak offer lower-cost entry points or free plans, while Memtime, ManicTime, and Timing offer more control over activity data. Insightful and Early take different approaches to automatic tracking, and Hubstaff adds job-site features for field teams.

Of the free plans, only TimeCamp’s covers unlimited users, and it also offers GPS and [kiosk](https://www.timecamp.com/time-tracking/kiosk/)
scheduling for field teams. Before comparing headline prices, add up the cost of the features you actually need: **Insightful starts at $8/user/month**, but on-demand screenshots and screen recording cost an **additional $4/user/month each**, and **Hubstaff’s GPS job sites require a higher subscription plus an add-on**. It also pays to check how each tool tracks automatically. Some use AI to categorize activity, while others log apps and documents and let you assign the time to tasks yourself.

| Timely alternatives at a glance TimeCamp: Automatic project tracking with a free plan for unlimited users, plus billing and attendance features. Memtime: Automatic desktop tracking that keeps activity data on your computer. ManicTime: Automatic tracking with local and self-hosted storage as well as a perpetual license. Early (formerly Timeular): Automatic tracking with a physical tracking device sold separately. Insightful: Automatic activity tracking, employee attendance, and workforce analytics starting at $8/user/month. RescueTime: Automatic activity tracking with a free Lite plan and optional timesheet features. Timing: Background time tracking for Mac users who want more control over their data. DeskTime: Automatic time tracking, productivity reports, and shift scheduling at a lower starting price. ActivTrak: Workforce analytics with a free plan for up to three employees. Hubstaff: Time tracking with GPS, geofencing, and job-site features for mobile and field teams. |
| --- |

These 10 Timely competitors address different limitations of Timely’s software. The list is in no particular order, and each tool offers a different reason to consider switching. If you’re choosing a Timely alternative, start with the feature or restriction that’s prompting you to switch.

## Why look for a Timely alternative?

The major appeal of Timely is its [automatic time tracking](https://www.timecamp.com/time-tracking/automatic-time-tracking/)
. People who frequently switch between tasks and fail to log their hours often find the automatic tracking convenient. The Memory app captures user activity on a computer and, with the help of AI, organizes the activity into timesheets.

However, the way Timely structures its plans can become problematic as your business grows.

| User limits: The Starter plan limits the number of users to five, while the Premium plan limits the number of users to 50. So, if you’re using the Starter plan and hire a sixth employee, you would need to upgrade to a more expensive plan even if you do not need the additional features. |
| --- |

**Cost at team scale:** A 12-person team would need at least the Premium plan, since Starter is limited to five users. At $16 per user per month with annual billing, that comes to $192 per month ($2,304 per year), before any add-ons.

| Project restrictions: The Starter plan limits the number of projects to 20. Agencies and consultancies managing numerous active clients would quickly reach this limitation. |
| --- |

**Additional costs:** Task management is not a part of the standard plan and is offered as an add-on for $5 per user per month.

| Cloud-based capture: Timely uses the Memory desktop app and cloud-based AI to capture activity and organize it into timesheets. Teams that are wary of AI to organize their activity may want to consider other alternatives. |
| --- |

Timely also offers a 14-day trial but no permanent free plan. That isn’t unusual among automatic time trackers, though. Several of the alternatives below also require paid subscriptions.

## TimeCamp

**What it fixes about Timely:** TimeCamp removes Timely’s five-user Starter cap and offers a free plan for unlimited users.

![a screenshot of the hero section of the timecamp homepage about improving project profitability with time tracking](https://www.timecamp.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/11/timely-alternatives-timecamp-hero-scaled.jpg)TimeCamp leads with project profitability, promising AI-powered time records and automated approvals. Author’s screenshot, October 2026.

#### What it is

TimeCamp is an all-in-one solution for time tracking, reporting, invoicing, attendance, and GPS. The Standard Desktop App offers the ability to assign recorded activity to projects using keywords from applications, window titles, and web addresses.

I created a sample project and recorded a short session using TimeCamp’s browser timer. After recording, I stopped the timer to see my daily timesheet. The timesheet showed the project, start time, end time, and duration of the session. Users can also add time manually. TimeCamp marked the Saturday entry as “Non-Working Day,” so I’d double check the settings for attendance reports, before relying on them to give me attendance for the week for work done over the weekend.

#### Key features against Timely

- **Unlimited users:** TimeCamp Free offers unlimited users and projects; Timely Starter limits users to five.
- **Rules-based assignment:** Project keywords replace AI-based assignments.
- **GPS:** Available on all plans, including Free (mobile app, timer running, admin-enabled).
- **Attendance:** Available from TimeCamp Starter and higher, not on the Free plan
- **Billing:** Starter includes [invoicing](https://www.timecamp.com/time-tracking/invoicing/) ; higher tiers add advanced rates and costs.

TimeCamp tracks client hours and costs, and while it doesn’t take long to set up project rules, its workforce analytics aren’t as thorough as those of specialized productivity-reporting tools.

**Pricing:** Free for an unlimited number of users. Starter costs $3.99/user/month (or $39.90/month for 10 users, billed annually).

**What costs extra:**Invoicing is available from Starter, while billable time tracking requires Premium. Ultimate adds billable rates, labor costs, and [timesheet approvals](https://www.timecamp.com/time-tracking/rapid-timesheet-approvals/)
, with screenshots available as an optional feature. Geofencing is restricted to Enterprise.

**Platforms:** Web, Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, Chrome and Edge extensions.

| Pros | Cons |
| --- | --- |
| Free plan for unlimited users | Keyword-based tracking requires configuration |
| Automatic tracking without mandatory AI categorization | Less detailed workforce analytics than some competitors |
| GPS included on Free | Billable rates and labor costs require Ultimate |
| Free kiosk and shift scheduling add-ons | Timesheet approvals require Ultimate |

##### No five-user cap

TimeCamp Free covers unlimited users and projects, so your whole team can track time without upgrading first.

[Start for free](https://app.timecamp.com/auth/register)

## Memtime

**What it fixes about Timely:** Memtime records desktop activity and keeps the logs on your computer rather than shipping them to a cloud AI to be categorized.

![a screenshot of the hero section of the memtime homepage about automatic time tracking built for privacy](https://www.timecamp.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/11/timely-alternatives-memtime-hero.png)Memtime’s homepage puts privacy first: automatic time tracking that keeps your activity data offline. Author’s screenshot, October 2026.

#### What it is

Memtime operates in the background to track documents, applications, and websites. Users go through activity history to assign time to projects and clients. This gives more control to consultants and people who work with sensitive information, but adds extra work at the end of the day when preparing timesheets.

#### Key features against Timely

- **Local records:**Activities are recorded locally, rather than uploaded automatically.
- **No comparable seat cap:**Memtime does not have Timely’s five-seat Starter or 50-seat Premium limits.
- **Desktop support:**Supported on Windows, macOS, and Linux.
- **Categorization:**Users can choose which projects they log.

While Memtime’s Starter subscription is priced higher than Timely’s Starter subscription, it gives users more control over how they define and categorize activities. Local records also don’t automatically sync across devices, so you still have to manually sort your activities for billability.

I’d be careful about expecting Memtime to produce finished timesheets automatically. By default, rules suggest time entries, but you still need to confirm the suggestions. Additionally, you can turn on auto entry creation, but this may defeat the purpose of reviewing entries for accuracy.

**Pricing:** Basic starts at $14/user/month (billed annually) or $12/user/month with a two-year commitment. There’s no free plan, but a 14-day trial is available.

**What costs extra:** External project-management integrations require Connect, starting at $21/user/month with annual billing.

**Platforms:** Windows, macOS, Linux; Memtime Projects is also accessible in a browser.

| Pros | Cons |
| --- | --- |
| Activity data stays on the user’s computer | More expensive than Timely Starter |
| Automatic tracking without AI categorization | No permanently free plan |
| Linux support | Requires manual project assignment |
| Detailed application and document history | Local activity records don’t automatically synchronize between devices |

Memtime is worth considering if keeping activity records locally is a priority and you’re comfortable taking a more hands-on approach to organizing your timesheets.

#### What users say

**Ratings:** G2 4.7/5 (259 reviews); Capterra 4.4/5 (125 reviews). Checked October 25, 2026.

> *Memtime has helped me capture time that could easily have slipped past me.*
>
> **Amanda W.**, G2, July 21, 2026

> *The main downside is that it is quite expensive compared to other time-tracking tools.*
>
> **Mandeep K.**, G2, September 6, 2025

## ManicTime

**What it fixes about Timely:** ManicTime records activity automatically, with local or self-hosted storage and a perpetual-license alternative to cloud subscriptions.

![a screenshot of the hero section of the manictime homepage with the headline your work, automatically tracked](https://www.timecamp.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/11/timely-alternatives-manictime-hero-scaled.jpg)ManicTime sums up its pitch in one line: your work, automatically tracked and turned into timesheets, reports, and billing. Author’s screenshot, October 2026.

#### What it is

ManicTime automates the timeline of activities. The app has local storage and self-hosting capabilities, and can also be purchased with a perpetual license. ManicTime is available on Windows, Mac, and Linux.

Self-hosting gives more control to the customer, but also means the customer is in charge of the configuration and management of the infrastructure.

When I installed ManicTime, recording began immediately without a start button. The Day view listed individual browser pages and applications with their durations. That detail was useful, but I didn’t like having tracking begin automatically, and it took me some searching to find the Off the record option. It was tucked into the tracker-status controls rather than the stopwatch controls visible at the top of the window.

#### Key features against Timely

- **Local tracking:** Activity is stored on the user’s computer.
- **Self-hosting:** Teams can store activity records on their own infrastructure.
- **Perpetual licensing:** Alternative to continuing cloud subscriptions.
- **Automatic timeline:** Activity is reconstructed and shown as a timeline.
- **Support:** Windows, macOS, and Linux.

**Pricing:** Cloud Standard starts at $7/month for individuals, billed annually, with a 30-day free trial. A perpetual license costs $87 for one user and includes self-hosted ManicTime Server. Team license prices vary by the number of users.

**What costs extra:** Higher tiers of the Cloud plan add more devices and increase screenshot storage. Upgrades after the first year of a perpetual license cost extra.

**Platforms:** Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, cloud, and self-hosted Server.

| Pros | Cons |
| --- | --- |
| Automatic background tracking | More configuration for self-hosted deployments |
| Local and self-hosted data options | No permanent free plan listed |
| Perpetual license available | Future upgrades cost extra |
| Multi-platform support | Time categorization still needs user input |

#### What users say

**Ratings:** G2 4.4/5 (14 reviews); Capterra 4.5/5 (22 reviews). Capterra has a slightly larger review sample, although both ratings are based on relatively few reviews. Checked October 24, 2026

> *This program is ideal for tracking what I really do.*
>
> **Verified User in Law Practice**, G2, April 22, 2026

> *Options for viewing and tracking times automatically could be improved.*
>
> **Shane F.**, G2, February 7, 2024

## TimeTac (formerly Early, formerly Timeular)

**What it fixes about Timely:** TimeTac combines automatic activity recording with a physical Tracker for switching between projects without opening a timer.

![a screenshot of the hero section of the timetac homepage about billable hours, leave, and overtime in one place](https://www.timecamp.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/11/timely-alternatives-timetac-hero.png)TimeTac promises one place for billable hours, leave, and overtime. Author’s screenshot, October 2026.

#### What it is

TimeTac provides automatic time tracking at the project level and manages employee attendance and leave. The desktop application records background activity of applications and websites. An optional physical Tracker, which resembles a clock face and can be rotated to select tasks, is also available.

TimeTac bought Early in 2025. New customers can sign up for TimeTac while older customers can continue using Early as it was.

#### Key features against Timely

- **Physical Tracker:** Turn the device to switch tracked activities.
- **Automatic capture:** Record the application and document activity without requiring users to start/stop timers.
- **Two tracking methods:** Desktop capture and a physical device combined.

TimeTac offers more ways to record time than Timely, but automatic tracking requires its Advanced plan. Users also need to purchase the physical Tracker separately.

I’ll keep an eye out for how TimeTac handles very short tasks. The Quicktrack timer displays time in seconds, but rounds up completed entries to whole minutes. This could be an issue for users that bill clients for short sessions.

**Pricing:** Essential starts at approximately $5.60/user/month, Standard at $7.84, and Advanced at $10.08, with automatic time tracking available on Advanced. Ten Advanced seats cost approximately $100.80/month. A 30-day free trial is available.

**What costs extra:** Standard or higher is required for project budgets and integrations. Advanced is required for automatic time tracking. The physical Tracker costs approximately $64.42 separately and requires an active subscription.

**Platforms:** Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android.

| Pros | Cons |
| --- | --- |
| Automatic and physical tracking methods | Automatic tracking requires Advanced |
| A quick way to switch activities | Separate Tracker hardware cost |
| Project-focused tracking | No permanent free plan |
| Existing customers retain their accounts | Legacy Early product is closed to new sign-ups |

#### What users say

**Ratings:** G2 4.6/5 (127 reviews on the last indexed Early listing); Capterra 4.6/5 (366 reviews). Checked October 24, 2026. Early’s G2 reviews are now displayed under TimeTac.

> *I really enjoy using EARLY with the built-in tracker.*
>
> **Jazzel R.**, G2, April 27, 2026

> *It wasn’t as robust or easy to integrate as we would have liked.*
>
> **Chris Z.**, G2, April 7, 2026

## Insightful

**What it fixes about Timely:** Insightful adds automatic employee attendance and shift scheduling to background activity tracking, at a lower starting price than Timely.

![a screenshot of the hero section of the insightful homepage with a productivity trends chart](https://www.timecamp.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/11/timely-alternatives-insightful-hero.png)Insightful frames its product around work insights that drive bottom-line efficiency, with a productivity trends chart front and center. Author’s screenshot, October 2026.

#### What it is

Insightful records work activity through its desktop app and shows working hours, apps and websites used, and when users are active or idle, all in easy-to-read web dashboards. It helps businesses see employee attendance and workload patterns instead of depending only on AI-generated client timesheets.

#### Key features against Timely

- **Automatic attendance:** Records clock-in and clock-out times and generates timesheets.
- **Shift scheduling:** Adds employee schedules and attendance reports that Timely doesn’t offer.
- **Application reports:** Shows which websites and software employees use during working hours.
- **Workload analytics:** Reports on productivity patterns and capacity across teams.
- **Team management:** Allows managers to review time cards and the activity of employees and departments.

Insightful offers more detailed workforce reporting than Timely, but approaches workforce tracking differently. Insightful’s dashboards cover employee activity and attendance, so teams primarily interested in [tracking billable client hours](https://www.timecamp.com/blog/best-billable-hours-tracker/)
should first test Insightful’s project tracking flow to determine if it meets their needs. To collect activity, a desktop application is required.

I’d adjust Insightful’s idle time settings to something a bit longer (perhaps 10 minutes) before relying heavily on the application’s activity reports. By default, the setting is set at 2 minutes of no input on the keyboard or mouse. With that setting, a person reading a long document would be reported as being idle when they are actually being really busy at work.

**Pricing:** Workforce Analytics starts at $8/user/month, billed annually ($80/month for 10 users). There is a 7-day free trial and no free, permanent plan.

**What costs extra:** Workflow Optimization is $12/user/month, and the combined plan starts at $16/user/month. On-demand screenshots and screen recording are $4/user/month each.

**Platforms:** Windows, Mac, Linux (beta), and web dashboard. No mobile app.

| Pros | Cons |
| --- | --- |
| Automatic attendance and timesheets | Desktop app required |
| Detailed app and website reporting | No permanent free plan |
| Shift scheduling | Linux support remains in beta |
| Lower starting price than Timely | Screen recording costs extra |

#### What users say

**Ratings:** G2 4.6/5 (474 reviews); Capterra 4.8/5 (253 reviews). Checked October 25, 2026.

> *Insightful makes tracking my work time quick and easy, and the results are both accurate and precise.*
>
> **Fred C.**, G2, August 24, 2026

> *The initial onboarding takes a while to understand and is a bit confusing.*
>
> **Abeer A.**, Capterra, August 25, 2026

## RescueTime

**What it fixes about Timely:** RescueTime offers automatic activity tracking with a permanent free Lite plan and paid individual subscriptions starting below Timely’s entry price.

![a screenshot of the hero section of the rescuetime homepage with the headline track your time, transform how you spend it](https://www.timecamp.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/11/timely-alternatives-rescuetime-hero.png)RescueTime bundles two tools in one app: Focus for concentration and automatic app tracking, and Timesheets for time by client, project, or task. Author’s screenshot, October 2026.

#### What it is

RescueTime tracks the time you spend using applications and websites without requiring you to start a timer. It organizes recorded activity into reports that help you understand where your working hours go.

RescueTime has historically been productivity-focused. It has recently added client/project records, billable rates, and reports. This makes it more appropriate for consultants and agencies than previous descriptions of RescueTime as purely a focus app.

#### Key features against Timely

- **Free plan:** RescueTime offers a free plan, Lite, that is available for life.
- **Individual Entry Price:** Solo is less than Timely Starter.
- **Activity Capture:** RescueTime captures work done on the computer automatically (like Timely) without requiring the user to toggle a timer.
- **Focus Tools:**RescueTime identifies distracting websites and applications.
- **Timesheet Subscriptions:** Customer billing and shared projects are available at higher tiers.

I wouldn’t rely on RescueTime Lite if I needed to review a full month’s work. RescueTime Lite’s free plan allows you to see the last 14 days only, and the free plan has other limitations if you want to analyze productivity for a longer period of time.

**Pricing:** The Lite plan is free. The Solo plan is $7/month, billed annually ($84/year). The Team plan is $10/user/month, or $100/month for 10 users.

**What costs extra:** Billable rates and customer timesheets are only supported at the Solo+ plan for $12/month or Team+ for $16/user/month, billed annually.

**Platforms:** Web, Windows, macOS, mobile.

| Pros | Cons |
| --- | --- |
| Free Lite plan | Entry plans focus more on productivity than billing |
| Automatic tracking | Timesheets require higher subscriptions |
| Lower individual starting price than Timely | Activity categories may need adjustment |
| Focus and distraction management tools | Less emphasis on project profitability than some competitors |

#### What users say

**Ratings:** G2 4.2/5 (93 reviews); Capterra 4.6/5 (141 reviews). Checked October 25, 2026.

> *…silently and non–intrusively map everything I do.*

## Timing

**What it fixes about Timely:** Automatically logs work on Macs and stores activity history on the Mac, unless the user enables synchronization.

![a screenshot of the hero section of the timing homepage with an activity timeline of mac apps and websites](https://www.timecamp.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/11/timely-alternatives-timing-hero.png)Timing promises to keep Mac users on top of their time without timers, with a timeline of apps and websites it recorded automatically. Author’s screenshot, October 2026.

#### What it is

Timing automatically logs applications, websites, and documents in the background. Users review a timeline, assign work to projects and export data for billing. Unlike Timely’s cloud-focused approach, activity is stored on the computer, even if working offline.

#### Key features against Timely

- **Local history:** No mandatory cloud synchronization.
- **Background capture:** Record apps and documents without using timers.
- **Project assignment:** Categorize activities as billable work.
- **Offline recording:** Track time without an internet connection.
- **Exports:** Categorize time for client reports.

Timing is only available on macOS, so it won’t work for organizations with Windows or Linux staff. Team collaboration, API access, and the number of supported Macs vary by plan.

I’d be careful when setting up automatic project rules in Timing. Rules don’t retroactively adjust previously tracked activities, so older activities may still be associated to the wrong project.

**Pricing:** The Professional plan is $9/user/month, Expert is $11/user/month, and Connect is $16/user/month, billed annually. Connect allows team collaboration, so for 10 users, it would cost $160/month. All plans are free to try for 30 days.

**What costs extra:** The Expert plan ($11/user/month) offers advanced reporting and filtering and allows two Macs per user. The Connect plan ($16/user/month) provides collaboration features and allows three Macs per user, as well as API access.

**Platforms:** macOS only.

| Pros | Cons |
| --- | --- |
| Automatic Mac activity capture | No Windows or Linux version |
| Local storage option | No free plan |
| Detailed application and document history | Team features require higher subscriptions |
| Offline tracking | Professional supports only one Mac per user |

Timing is most relevant to individuals and Mac-only businesses looking for automatic capture without Timely’s cloud-based approach.

## DeskTime

**What it fixes about Timely:** DeskTime combined lower-priced automatic tracking with workforce productivity reports and scheduling.

![a screenshot of the hero section of the desktime homepage about automatic time tracking software for productivity insights](https://www.timecamp.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/11/timely-alternatives-desktime-hero-scaled.jpg)DeskTime pitches automatic time tracking for productivity insights, showing a remote team’s hours, apps, and project time. Author’s screenshot, October 2026.

#### What it is

DeskTime tracks computer activity and sorts apps and websites as productive, neutral, or unproductive. It provides reports on employee hours, attendance, projects, and optional screenshots. New users can try it free for 14 days.

#### Key features against Timely

- **Lower price:**The Pro plan costs less than Timely Starter.
- **Background tracking:**Tracks computer use automatically, so you don’t need to start a timer for each task.
- **Productivity categories:**Sorts apps and websites by how productive they are.
- **Calendar integrations:**Adds meetings from your calendar to your time reports.

I tested DeskTime’s desktop tracker and reviewed its web dashboard. After about eight minutes, it captured what applications and websites I used and classified five minutes as productive, resulting in a 63.45% score. The breakdown was helpful, but I’d review the classifications before relying on that percentage. Project time (aka the time I spent that I could bill clients for) was left empty.

**Pricing:** Pro begins at $6.42/month/user, billed annually ($64.20/month for 10 users). A 14-day trial is available.

**What costs extra:** Screenshots, shift scheduling, API access, and several integrations require Premium, starting at $9.17/user/month with annual billing.

**Platforms:** Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, web dashboard.

| Pros | Cons |
| --- | --- |
| Lower entry price than Timely | No permanent free plan |
| Automatic desktop time tracking | Productivity categories require review |
| Scheduling features on higher plans | Screenshots and integrations cost extra |
| Calendar integrations | Detailed automatic desktop tracking requires an installed app |

DeskTime suits companies that want automatic tracking but also need more information about employee schedules and productivity.

#### What users say

## ActivTrak

**What it fixes about Timely:** ActivTrak offers free automatic activity collection for up to three workers and paid plans without Timely’s five-user and 50-user plan restrictions.

![a screenshot of the hero section of the activtrak homepage with an activity dashboard showing team productivity and capacity](https://www.timecamp.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/11/timely-alternatives-activtrak-hero.png)ActivTrak now presents itself as work intelligence for the AI era, with a dashboard of team productivity and capacity. Author’s screenshot, October 2026.

#### What it is

ActivTrak records background computer activity and offers reports and dashboards with that info.

Managers can look at workload distribution, work patterns, and [employee activity](https://www.timecamp.com/blog/best-employee-monitoring-software/)
to find ways to improve productivity. ActivTrak’s main purpose is not to piece together billable time like Timely does.

#### Key features against Timely

- **Free plan:**Up to 3 users with 30 days of activity history.
- **Automatic collection:**Background capture of computer activity.
- **No comparable paid-plan seat limit:**Bigger teams don’t have to upgrade.
- **Workforce analytics:**Reports on productivity and workload of employees.

I’d check ActivTrak’s minimum paid seat count before choosing it for a small team. The free plan covers three workers, but paid subscriptions require at least five licenses. A four-person business would have to pay for an extra seat.

**Pricing:** Free for up to three workers. Paid plans start at $10/month/user, billed annually ($100/month for 10 workers).

**What costs extra:** AI Insights are an additional $4/worker/month. You need Advanced for workforce management features. ActivTrak only offers annual billing.

**Platforms:**Windows and Mac.

| Pros | Cons |
| --- | --- |
| Free plan for three workers | Limited free-plan data history |
| Automatic activity collection | Less focused on client billing |
| Workforce and productivity analytics | Annual billing only |
| No comparable paid-plan seat cap | Advanced analytics and AI cost extra |

#### What users say

## Hubstaff

**What it fixes about Timely:** Hubstaff adds GPS job sites, geofencing, and work orders for employees who move between physical locations.

![a screenshot of the hero section of the hubstaff homepage about time tracking software for modern workforces](https://www.timecamp.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/11/timely-alternatives-hubstaff-hero.png)Hubstaff targets modern workforces with time tracking, productivity metrics, and automated payments for distributed teams. Author’s screenshot, October 2026.

#### What it is

Hubstaff is an all-in-one solution for time tracking, activity tracking, work scheduling, and GPS tracking. While its desktop apps track employee work activity, its mobile apps are for location-based time tracking. Timely’s mobile apps also have GPS, but Hubstaff offers more advanced job-site workflows.

#### Key features against Timely

- **GPS Job Sites:**Tie tracked time to work locations.
- **Geofencing:**Set attendance rules based on location.
- **Work Orders:**Manage work orders and site visits.
- **Employee Scheduling:**Plan employee work schedules (team plans only).
- **Activity Reports:**Review tracked work and app/web activity.

Unlike Timely, Hubstaff does not have automatic work tracking. Employees have to manually start timers and assign projects. Businesses may want to look at Timely’s Memory feature first.

I’d pay particular attention to Hubstaff’s GPS settings before using it with field employees. Location tracking can be limited to active timer sessions, but the Always setting can also be set to always track location, even when the app is running in the background.

**Pricing:** Their Starter plan is $4.99/user/month, billed annually, with a 2 user minimum ($49.90/month for 10 users). Their Team plan is $10/user/month, billed annually. There is no free, forever plan, but they do provide a 14 day free trial.

**What costs extra:** GPS job sites, geofencing, and work orders require the Locations add-on, from $3.33/user/month. It is available with Team and included in Enterprise. For ten users, Team plus Locations therefore starts at $133.30/month. The $4.99 Starter price does not include those field tools.

**Platforms:** Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, web.

| Pros | Cons |
| --- | --- |
| GPS and geofencing for field teams | No permanent free plan |
| Job-site and work-order features | Some features require paid add-ons |
| Workforce scheduling | Tracking may require employee timer interaction |
| Desktop and mobile support | Less focused on AI-generated timesheets |

#### What users say

**Ratings:** G2 4.4/5 (2,334 reviews); Capterra 4.5/5 (1,615 reviews). Checked October 24, 2026.

## How to choose the right Timely alternative

Start with the limitation that’s causing you to leave Timely. Not all 10 options address the same limitation and some cost more than Timely when you compare equal subscriptions.

- **If you’ve outgrown Timely’s user caps:** Look at tools without comparable per-plan headcount limits. TimeCamp and Memtime are possibilities, although their costs and features differ substantially.
- **If Timely is too expensive for your team:** DeskTime and RescueTime offer lower entry rates. ManicTime also has a cloud subscription starting below Timely, along with alternatives to a recurring cloud subscription.
- **If you don’t want cloud-based activity storage:** Timing, Memtime, and ManicTime have local tracking options. Memtime and ManicTime support all major platforms, while Timing is Mac-only.
- **If you want automatic tracking with more workforce reporting:**Insightful records employee activity and attendance automatically, with detailed reports on application usage and productivity patterns. However, it focuses less on AI-generated client timesheets than Timely.
- **If you want to keep it free:** TimeCamp and ActivTrak both have free plans, as does Timely, however ActivTrak’s free plans have user limits (3 users)
- **If your employees work in the field:** TimeCamp and Hubstaff both give you [GPS tracking](https://www.timecamp.com/time-tracking/location-monitoring/) as well as a shared device kiosk and shift scheduling.

## Timely alternatives FAQ

### What are some alternatives to Timely?

The best Timely alternative depends on what you want to improve. TimeCamp has a free plan for unlimited users. Memtime and Timing store activity records on your device. DeskTime includes workforce reporting and scheduling. Hubstaff has GPS job-site tracking for field teams.

### Is there a free alternative to Timely?

Yes. TimeCamp offers a free plan for unlimited users, RescueTime has a free Lite plan for individual activity tracking, and ActivTrak offers a free plan for up to three workers. Other automatic trackers on this list offer free trials rather than permanent free plans.

### What is similar to Timely?

Memtime and Timing are both apps like Timely that automatically record computer activity without requiring users to start and stop timers. Both Memtime and Timing let users review their activity records and assign time to projects themselves.

### What is a cheaper alternative to Timely?

TimeCamp, DeskTime, and RescueTime all have cheaper individual plans compared to Timely, but compare the features included with each plan. Some less expensive individual plans don’t include features like client billing or team reports that you may need.

### Can a Timely alternative track time automatically without sending activity data to the cloud?

Yes, Memtime automatically captures activity data and stores it locally. ManicTime also has local tracking and self-hosted storage. Timing can store activity records on a Mac and eliminates the need for cloud synchronization.

### Which Timely alternatives have no per-plan user limits?

TimeCamp, Memtime, and Insightful don’t use Timely’s five-user Starter or 50-user Premium plan limits. TimeCamp offers a free plan for unlimited users, while Insightful’s Workforce Analytics starts at $8/user/month, billed annually. Each additional tracked employee increases the subscription cost.

### Can I use a Timely alternative for field employees?

Yes. Hubstaff supports GPS job-site tracking and geofencing through its Locations add-on. TimeCamp offers GPS tracking on all plans, including Free, while geofencing is reserved for Enterprise. TimeCamp also provides free marketplace add-ons for a shared-device kiosk and shift scheduling.

### Is automatic time tracking accurate enough for client billing?

Automatic time tracking reduces the likelihood of forgetting to track time, but the software may not know the specific client work or project the time is spent on and may capture time spent in an application. Rules-based time tracking and AI can both help assign time to a project. Prior to sending an invoice, make sure time is assigned to the project it is related to and check for personal time off and/or time spent doing non-work-related activities.

##### One tracker, every team

Track project hours on desktop and GPS time on mobile, even on the Free plan, with free kiosk and shift scheduling add-ons.
