**Clio is an AI-powered, cloud-based legal practice management platform that can help law firms of all sizes manage and speed up operations.** Once set up, it can handle almost everything, from client intake to contact and matter management, document management, [time tracking](https://www.timecamp.com/)
, billing, reporting, and more. Plans start at $49 per user per month.

In this detailed article, you’ll learn what exactly Clio is, how it works, and who it’s for (and who should probably choose another tool to track hours for their law practice).

| How do we review software in TimeCamp? A human is behind every word posted here. We value our users’ time and trust, so you can be sure our team (Ola, Wojtek, Kasia, Iza, Robert, and others) spent real hours testing the apps, and then researching, briefing, and writing this article. Our writers are also app users, so we write our recommendations based on what we would read as potential clients. Our main rule is “do not cover without a source.”We also revisit and update our articles to cover notable changes to the app’s features or pricing (at least quarterly). **Clio works, especially if you’re looking for a leading, all-in-one legal practice management platform**. It can definitely help you move faster and work through cases more efficiently once you’ve mastered all its tools. That said, if you only want *some* of its many (*and there are quite a few*) features, you might feel pressured to pay for more than you actually need.

| Key Takeaways: Clio has served clients for almost two decades and has established itself as a leading legal practice management platform. It combines billable time tracking, legal invoicing, and trust accounting, with automatic AI time capture for supported email, document, and mobile-call activity. The cheapest plan (Starter) starts at $49/user/month, while the more advanced tiers are quote-based. Clio offers a ton of features and is easy to use, but costs ramp up quickly as you scale. Some users claim that support is slow when tackling complex issues, and a few mention unclear subscription trial terms and cancellation hiccups. |

## What is Clio practice management software, and who is it built for? (2026)

**Clio is an all-in-one legal practice management platform from** Clio (Themis Solutions). With an AI assistant, it aims to centralize matters, contacts, documents, calendaring, time tracking, billing, trust accounting, and client intake (via Clio Grow) as a comprehensive solution for the legal industry.

If you’re skeptical because that sounds like a lot, you’re not alone. Clio has been around for almost two decades, and it’s been steadily adding features in an attempt to become a one-stop-shop software for legal professionals.

Thankfully, the initial setup isn’t too daunting. **I signed up for my very own Manage account** and was able to set up a few matters in under 15 minutes. Color me impressed!

Its two main products are Clio Manage and Clio Grow:

- **Clio Manage** handles post-hire legal operations and billing. It’s available on all plans, starting with the affordable Starter plan at $49 per user per month.
- **Clio Grow** focuses on pre-hire client acquisition and intake CRM. It’s included in the top-tier Elite plan, but you can also access it as an add-on on the Core and Signature plans.

![matters view in Clio](https://www.timecamp.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/clio-time-entries.png)Adding contacts and setting up matters is pretty straightforward (Author’s screenshot, September 2026).

There’s also **Clio Work** (research, case strategy, document analysis, and legal research) and **Clio Draft** (form filling and template management), which you can purchase separately or add to your plan as add-ons.

**Clio suits:**

- **Small law firms** looking for a versatile LPMS with a deep integration ecosystem;
- **Mid-sized law firms** that want to combine document management with easy payment collection;
- **Larger firms** planning to scale operations and stay organized with plenty of users.

| Clio boasts the largest legaltech ecosystem in the world, with over 360 app integration partners. |

## How does Clio work?

Clio makes the matter the central record that connects the client, casework, time, and billing.

1. **Create the client record and open a matter.**A contact represents a person or organization, while a matter represents a specific legal engagement. The matter holds key details such as the responsible attorney, practice area, access permissions, and billing arrangement. If you also use Grow, you can first collect intake information and convert the matter into Manage once the prospect becomes a client.
2. **Organize the work inside that matter.**A case record will hold crucial documents, notes, tasks, calendar events, and communications. You can review everything at a glance, and it’s easy to stay on top of new information by following the dedicated tabs from the left-side menu (e.g., Billing, Documents, Communications).
3. **Record time and expenses against the matter.**You can start the timer anytime by pressing the corresponding button in the top-right corner. Once you’re done, you simply assign it to a matter and mark it as billable or non-billable.
4. **Turn the recorded work into a bill.**From the Billing menu, select “New Bill,” tick the recorded billable entries assigned to that contact, and click “Generate” to create a new invoice. From the Matters menu, you can also use the “Quick bill” function to quickly generate a bill from all billable items tied to a specific matter.
5. **Follow payments, balances, and firm performance.**Once you’ve approved and sent an invoice, you can check a matter’s financial overview from its corresponding dashboard. From there, you can also add new expenses and track individual transactions. Use Clio’s templated reports to get a quick overview of your firm’s billing history or even check unpaid and overdue bills by client.

![editing a single time entry in Clio](https://www.timecamp.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/clio-time-entry.png)Before saving an entry, make sure that the assigned matter and rate are correct (Author’s screenshot, September 2026).

## What does Clio do well, and where does it fall short?

Clio’s biggest strength is how it connects casework with billing, administration, and case management, which **helps reduce administrative burdens**. Keeping documents, recorded time, invoices, and client information in one secure location also supports the firm’s operations.

Adding more features and products increases the total cost fast. Clio also has many moving parts, so moving an established firm onto the platform and making the most of all its tools can be a real challenge.

| | Clio falls short when |
| --- | --- |
| Getting started with the basics. It’s easy to set up matters without configuring everything first. | You need a predictable budget upfront. Most plans require a quote, and per-user charges, optional products, and payment-processing fees add up quickly. |
| Keeping your records organized. Your matter’s documents, communications, time entries, and bills are all there in one place. | You expect the full platform at the entry price. You won’t have access to the client portal, custom reporting, or Clio Grow as a Starter user. |
| Handling billing requirements. Access flat-fee and contingency billing, LEDES invoicing, and trust account management. | A technical problem needs sustained support. Some reviewers describe unresolved accounting-sync issues and frustrating follow-up. |
| Extending the platform through integrations. Expand your options with over 360 connections and specialist tools. | You’re moving an established practice. Moving everything takes time, and some reviewers report migration problems and accounting discrepancies. |
| Assisting with routine administrative tasks. Clio’s legal AI can prepare draft invoices, create client updates, and even suggest next actions. | You need to change or end a subscription. A few users report cancellation difficulties or charges for unused licenses at renewal. |

| From billing to CRM to scheduling to task management, it handles everything with ease. Eric B., Owner, Law Practice, Capterra, November 4, 2025, 5/5 | Clio is one of the more expensive platforms, and some features are locked behind higher-tier plans. Jennifer N., CSR, Consumer Services, Capterra, August 9, 2026, 4/5 |
| --- | --- |

![an invoice generated in Clio](https://www.timecamp.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/clio-invoice.jpeg)Here’s what a standard generated invoice looks like (Author’s screenshot, September 2026).

G2’s 2026 review summary tells a similar story: **users appreciate the wide array of management and billing features, but many cite piling costs and the time it takes to learn its advanced features as major drawbacks.**

| During the 7-day trial, make a note of the features your firm would actually use and check which plan includes them. For example, to access the client portal you’d need to be on Core, while custom reporting requires Signature or Elite. Once you know what you need, you can ask for a quote covering those requirements and your full team, which will give you a better idea of the setup cost. |
| --- |

## How does time tracking work in Clio?

Clio time tracking is as straightforward as it gets. You can track work using the built-in timer or enter time manually afterward. The timer is always accessible, sitting on the right side of the blue top bar. For manual entries, you have a few options:

- Create an entry via the “Activities” tab from the left-side menu and assign it to a matter.
- Navigate to an individual matter and click on “New time entry” under “Activities.”
- Click on “Create New” > “Time entry” from the Dashboard menu.

![Time entries under Clio's Activities tab](https://www.timecamp.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/clio-time-entry.jpeg)Creating manual time entries via the Activities tab is simple enough (Author’s screenshot, 2026).

Add a description for your records, check the duration and rate, and remember to mark it as billable or non-billable. This setup enhances efficiency for lawyers who need cleaner billing data. Adding time directly to documents, tasks, calendar events, and communications is equally easy.

All Clio Manage plans come with standard time and [expense tracking](https://www.timecamp.com/time-tracking/expenses/)
, and you can access both timers and manual entries via the iOS/Android apps, too.

### Does Clio have automatic time tracking?

Clio advertises on its website passive [time capture](https://www.timecamp.com/time-tracking/)
 for:

- Outlook emails,
- document work saved in OneDrive,
- outbound calls made through its mobile app.

Its **AI can also suggest time entries** based on communications, notes, and completed tasks already recorded in your account.

Third-party [integrations](https://www.timecamp.com/integrations/)
, such as **WiseTime**, also offer passive tracking outside Clio. WiseTime records activity in the background, identifies relevant matters from document and email titles, and lets you review which entries to send to Clio for billing.

Users on Clio Core and up can also use AI to **create draft invoices from recorded time and expense**s. Automated billing requires an initial parameter setup, including the billing schedule and rules. You then edit the resulting drafts, and Clio routes them for review and final approval.

##### Don’t need all of Clio’s features?

If you don’t need a full practice management platform, consider TimeCamp for standalone automatic time capture organized by client or matter.

## What are the pros and cons of Clio?

Clio works best when you want to combine advanced legal documentation with document automation. It promises to **reduce routine legal drafting tasks by up to 80%** and offers flexible time tracking, plus AI-enhanced invoice drafting and billing. The main challenge is figuring out exactly which tools you need (it’s easy to overpay for stuff you won’t use!) and how to incorporate them all smoothly into your team’s workflow.

| Pros of Clio | Cons of Clio |
| --- | --- |
| Straightforward basic matter setup in hands-on testing | Most plans require a quote, with per-user charges and optional products increasing costs |
| Matter records connect documents, communications, time entries, and bills | Starter excludes the client portal, custom reporting, and Clio Grow |
| Supports flat-fee and contingency billing, LEDES invoicing, and trust account management | Some reviewers report unresolved accounting-sync issues and frustrating support follow-up |
| Broad integration ecosystem extends the platform with specialist tools | A few users report migration problems and accounting discrepancies |
| AI assists with draft invoices, client updates, suggested next actions, and document automation | Reviewers have difficulties canceling, and they often mention renewal charges for unused licenses |

## Who is Clio for, and who might not need the full platform?

Clio suits law firms that want to keep casework, client information, time, and billing connected, with legal documents kept in one secure location and unlimited storage included. There’s value in its extended platform and various products if you’re looking to coordinate those activities across multiple matters and team members, while keeping contact details centralized for easier client communication.

I recommend starting with the legal functions your practice actually needs. Matter management, trust accounting, and legal billing are all things Clio does particularly well. **If all you need is a tool to record hours and send invoices to your clients, you won’t use enough of the platform to justify the cost.**

| Use case | Fit | What this means in practice |
| --- | --- | --- |
| You want one system from client intake to invoice | ✓ | Clio Manage connects matter records, documents, time entries, and billing. Include Clio Grow in your setup if you also need its intake and CRM features. Its document management system also tracks changes with version history, and clients can share documents through the client portal. |
| Your firm needs trust accounting and legal billing | ✓ | Clio supports trust account management, LEDES invoicing, and hourly, flat-fee, and contingency billing, along with matters and calendaring. It’s a sensible choice as a robust LPMS. |
| You want integrations and AI help with routine administration | ✓ | Clio offers a broad integration ecosystem, including Microsoft Teams and Google Workspace, plus AI features for tasks such as drafting invoices and client updates to support seamless collaboration. |
| You only need billable time tracking and invoices | – | A focused time-and-billing tool may cover the entire workflow. Why pay for Clio’s practice management features if you have no use for them? |
| You’re a solo with limited requirements and a tight budget | – | Optional features and payment-processing fees affect the total cost. Note that the Starter plan doesn’t come with AI billing and Clio Grow. |
| You only need passive tracking across your desktop apps | – | Clio can passively capture time spent on emails and outbound calls via the Clio app, but other desktop tools you use might not be supported. A dedicated tracker may suffice. |

## How much does Clio cost, and what are the pricing plans in 2026?

Clio has four practice management plans. Starter has a published starting price of $49 per user per month, but Core, Signature, and Elite require a quote. The main differences are AI features, reporting, workflow controls, and client intake (Clio Grow).

| Plan | Price | Key features |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Starter | From $49/user/month | Matters, contact management, documents, time tracking, billing, and trust accounting |
| Core | Quote required | Starter features plus AI billing, client updates, client portal, and accounting integrations |
| Signature | Quote required | Core features plus custom reporting, matter budgets, automated workflows, and unlimited custom roles |
| Elite | Quote required | Signature features plus Clio Grow* for client intake and CRM |

**Clio Grow is also available on Core and Signature as a paid add-on*

There’s no permanent free plan, but you can try Clio Manage (the base product) for seven days without a credit card.

Core is worth considering if AI billing and the client portal are priorities. Signature makes more sense when you need custom reports and greater control over workflows. If you also want to manage client intake, the top-tier Elite plan (which includes Grow at a 17% discount) seems like a sensible choice.

| Instead of guessing, ask for a quote covering your full team and required add-ons, with payment-processing fees listed separately. Double-check renewal and cancellation conditions before committing. |

## Frequently asked questions about Clio

### What does Clio do?

Clio helps law firms manage matters, contacts, documents, calendars, time tracking, billing, and trust accounts. Its products support legal workflows, and Clio software offers an all-in-one setup for matters, billing, and documents while connecting legal administration with client intake and casework.

### How much does Clio cost per month?

The Starter plan begins at $49 per user per month. The higher-tier plans (Core, Signature, and Elite) require a quote, though the total cost depends on the number of users and selected add-ons.

### Is Clio a legit company?

Yes. Clio is an established legal-software provider founded in 2008 and headquartered in Vancouver, Canada. The company operates as Themis Solutions Inc.

### Is Clio a CRM?

Clio offers a dedicated CRM and client intake product called Clio Grow. Clio Grow helps firms capture potential clients through customizable intake forms, while Clio Manage handles ongoing practice management, including matters, time tracking, and billing.

### Is Clio free?

No. There’s no free plan, but you can sign up and test Clio Manage for seven days without a credit card.

### Does Clio do trust accounting?

Yes. All Clio Manage plans include trust account management, reporting, and reconciliation tools to help firms keep track of client funds. Firms can also sync financial data through QuickBooks and Xero integrations to generate financial reports more easily, and phone support is available if they need help setting up those accounting connections.

## Is Clio the right choice?

Clio is a strong choice for small to mid-size law firms, **especially small firms that want one system for casework, billing, trust accounting, and client intake, including practices handling personal injury matters**. Cost is the main drawback since add-ons increase the bill, and most plans require a quote, though features like client communication and online payments may justify the higher price for some firms. Larger law firms may need to pay a lot upfront, and migration can take a while.

Be sure to check the automatic renewal terms before committing; **many reviewers report frustration with cancellations and unexpected plan refreshes**.

| If you need automatic time tracking and invoicing without an extensive case management system, TimeCamp offers a much more focused option, with clients or matters organized as projects. |
