In November 2018, we’ve released a brand new version of our desktop application, which includes the full feature set available within the web application.
Before, our desktop application was a small client that only allowed tracking time. Now, based on our Customers’ feedback, we’ve decided to release a desktop app that includes full feature set available from the web application level, available at www.timecamp.com
1. Where to get it
If you have registered a trial account after November 19th, 2019 you’ll automatically be able to download the new version of the desktop application from the drop-down menu in right upper corner of your screen.
TimeCamp will automatically detect the operating system you’re working on and allow you to download the installer you need.
Run the downloaded installer and log into your TimeCamp account using the same credentials as on the web app available at www.timecamp.com
2. Using the application
The application’s interface allows you to do everything you would be able to do using the web application.
You can resize the application and adjust it to your needs as you would any other software.
Our desktop app also has includes additional features described below.
3. Tracking computer activities
The desktop application can monitor your computer activity and send the data of it to our servers, allowing you to better analyze your workday and generate efficiency reports.
To enable the computer activity monitoring, right click on the desktop app’s icon in your taskbar.
Make sure the “Track computer activities” option is ticked. This will tell the app to gather details about applications you’re using and websites you’re visiting, as well as (optionally) window titles.
If you leave this option disabled, all your working time will be reported with generic “computer activity” description.
The updated version of our desktop application also includes one of the most requested features – shortcuts.
TimeCamp offers you 3 types of shortcuts:
– Show – use it if you want to quickly get to the window of our application and turn your system’s focus to it,
– Start the timer – use it to instantly start a new timer. It will turn the focus into the desktop application and show the task list to select a task from. If you were already running a timer, it’ll automatically be stopped and a new entry will be created with the new timer running.
– Stop the timer – use it if you want to stop the timer for a time entry running on your timesheet.
Take a look at the table below to see what combination to use on your favorite operating system.
You can always see these shortcuts by right-clicking on the desktop application’s icon, available in your system’s taskbar, near the clock.
|Show||Ctrl + Alt + Shift + /||Cmd + Alt + Shift + /||Ctrl + Alt + Shift + /|
|Start the timer||Ctrl + Alt + Shift + . [dot]||Cmd + Alt + Shift + . [dot]||Ctrl + Alt + Shift + . [dot]|
|Stop the timer||Ctrl + Alt + Shift + , [colon]||Cmd + Alt + Shift + , [colon]||Ctrl + Alt + Shift + , [colon]|
5. Automatic task switching
Our desktop application can work in automatic mode and track time for you on its own!
You’d need to setup keywords and assign them to your tasks.
TimeCamp will looks for those keywords in applications’ names, window titles and URL addresses of websites you visit.
To activate the automation, make sure the “Automatic task switching” option is enabled in the app context menu, available when you right-click on the tray icon, available in your system’s taskbar, near the clock.
If you wish your desktop application to start automatically when you turn your computer on, make sure the “Start with computer” option is enabled in the app context menu, available when you right-click on the tray icon, available in your system’s taskbar, near the clock.
7. Time widget
The desktop application is equipped with a small widget that will always be visible, informing you on the task you currently track time to.
Clicking on the widget will start a new time entry and turn your focus into the main window of the application to select a task you want to track time to.
You can easily stop the timer by clicking on the “Pause” icon on the right side of the widget.
This widget is resizable – you can change its size by clicking on the edge and expanding or decreasing the widget. You can also move it on any place on your desktop you find suitable by dragging and dropping the widget.
For now, the widget is only resizable on Windows and Linux.
To hide the widget, make sure the “Time widget” option is unmarked in the app’s context menu, available when you right-click on the tray icon, available in your system’s taskbar, near the clock.
