How do we create content and review software in TimeCamp?
We want to assure you that there’s a real person behind each and every word published within TimeCamp’s blog. Our editorial team has 10+ years of experience writing SaaS content, including testing and using a variety of tools daily.
1. Who’s behind our reviews?
Our editorial team consists of experienced writers who have been writing about the SaaS niche for more than 10 years. Over that time, we’ve built our background by reading about and testing hundreds of tools inside and outside our niche. This expertise makes us confident sharing unbiased knowledge through writing, publishing software reviews, and offering tips and recommendations.
If we have doubts or notice discrepancies, we consult our dev, customer success, or support team to ensure everything we write aligns with current tech knowledge.
2. How do we choose software to review?
It all starts with the article subject – it creates a tool pool, a long list of tools that share the same characteristics. Then we do extensive market research, comparing tools’ features, pricing, integrations, security, support capabilities, and more. We also read and analyze client reviews on online marketplaces such as G2 or Capterra, as well as case studies published by vendors on their websites.
3. How do we test the chosen tools?
Once the tool shortlist is ready, we can begin testing. First, we sign up for a tool’s free trial (if available; if not, we note that at the beginning of the tool description). We complete onboarding and configure the account with our data so we can capture accurate, rich-data screenshots. If a tool provides a desktop or mobile application, we download it and run it for a few hours, during which we test its capabilities and collect data.
This way, we capture the real workflow, verify the pros and cons shared by other users in online marketplace reviews, and base our final verdicts on real data rather than guesswork or unconfirmed claims.
When writing a review, we cover the app's general features in detail, describe its pros and cons, and include information such as pricing and platform availability (see the detailed list of evaluation criteria below). We also include screenshots we captured while testing the app and real user reviews from online marketplaces such as G2 or Capterra.
Our articles follow a similar structure, making them easy to skim and quickly find the key details about each app.
4. What criteria do we use to base our reviews?
We evaluate products by assessing characteristics common to all shortlisted products. These characteristics may vary based on the features relevant to the subject matter.
Besides that, our usual fixed set of evaluation criteria includes:
- Ease of use – Learning curve, layout intuitiveness
- Accessibility – Availability and syncing across different platforms and devices
- Scalability – The ability to keep accommodating the team as it grows and adjusting to the custom needs of the enterprise setups
- Security – Meeting compliance and data protection standards, transparency regarding users' privacy
- Pricing – Subscription models, free plan and free trial availability
- Flexibility – The ability to adapt to the needs of different workflows (e.g. in-office, hybrid or remote), billing models, or industries
- Support – Availability of client support channels, such as team chat, documentation, or help centers
5. What source do we use in our research?
Our reviews are always based on vendors’ official materials. We don’t use third-party sources, and we double- or triple-check marketing claims against provided documentation, such as knowledge bases, help centers, and dedicated user forums. We also use real user reviews from online software marketplaces such as G2 and Capterra.
Our main rule is “do not cover without a source.”
6. Trustworthiness and transparency
Our writers are also app users, so we write our recommendations based on what we would read as potential clients. That’s why we do our best to provide the most up-to-date information about the app, along with first-hand experience. We also revisit and update our articles to cover notable changes to the app’s features or pricing (at least quarterly). We do not offer favorable mentions in exchange for payments.
If a piece of content or a previously reviewed app no longer meets our standards, we often remove it to keep our content useful and high-quality.
If you noticed a discrepancy in our content, contact us via our support channels.
