Construction time tracking gets complicated as soon as crews move between job sites and the office and need work hours ready for payroll. Here, I’m looking at what makes that workflow reliable and which tools fit it best. Field and office time has to reach the right project or cost code, then move cleanly into payroll and job costing. Otherwise, labor costs get blurry fast, especially when crews fill in timesheets from memory at the end of the day or week.

Eight hours on a timesheet still don’t tell you much on their own, because missed clock-ins create payroll headaches. Besides, wrong job assignments show up later in cost reports, and buddy punching creates a separate accuracy problem.

Mobile clock-ins bring the record closer to what actually happened on site. Project-based timesheets keep those hours attached to the right job, with GPS verification adding another layer of location data. That’s the part I’d pay attention to first.

Construction teams also put very different pressure on software after the hours are recorded. Sometimes GPS is the sticking point. In other cases, the real headache starts with approvals or getting the data into accounting. Good software has to fit that chain without creating another layer of admin work

Quick verdict:

The tools below are listed in workflow order. Each tool addresses a different construction time tracking or billing need.

  • TimeCamp: Field and office hours connected to billing and accounting
  • busybusy: GPS-first construction field tracking and job-level labor visibility
  • ClockShark: Job scheduling and field time tracking in one workflow
  • Connecteam: Time tracking inside wider field workforce operations and communication
  • Arcoro Time (ExakTime): Construction time capture tied closely to payroll and prevailing-wage workflows
  • QuickBooks Time: Field hours connected directly to an existing QuickBooks accounting and payroll stack
  • SmartBarrel: Biometric time tracking with a touch of AI insights
  • Workyard: GPS-verified field time connected closely to construction job costing
  • Raken: Employee and crew time tied to daily field reporting and production data
  • Buildterrend: Time tracking inside a larger workflow for home builders and remodelers
  • Procore: Labor time inside a full construction management platform for larger contractors

How do we review software in TimeCamp?

A human is behind every word posted here. We value our users’ time and trust, so you can be sure our team (Ola, Wojtek, Kasia, Iza, Robert, and others) spent real hours testing the apps, and then researching, briefing, and writing this article.

Our editorial team has 10+ years of experience writing SaaS content, including testing and using a variety of tools daily. Our writers are also app users, so we write our recommendations based on what we would read as potential clients. Our main rule is “do not cover without a source.”We also revisit and update our articles to cover notable changes to the app’s features or pricing (at least quarterly).

Happy reading!

Whether in-office or field

And from independent contractors to large construction crews, TimeCamp makes sure every work hour lands into timesheets.

What to look for in construction time tracking software?

I’d start with the field workflow and follow the hours from there. Good construction labor tracking software needs to record time reliably at the job site and keep it attached to the right project or cost code. Once those hours reach the office, approvals and payroll shouldn’t require another round of manual cleanup.

Need

What to check

Typical system

Core time capture

Mobile clock-in/out, GPS verification, project selection, cost codes, timesheet approvals, labor or billable rates, reporting, payroll and accounting integrations

Time tracking software

Field controls

Geofencing, shared kiosk or construction time clock, photo or biometric verification, offline capability, supervisor or crew clock-in, multiple locations, break rules and overtime calculations

Time tracker, with some features gated by plan or vendor

Payroll, compliance and full costing

Certified payroll, prevailing-wage calculations, union rules, payroll processing, estimating, equipment and material costs

Payroll or construction accounting software

Offline functionality deserves more attention than it usually gets on a pricing page. Job sites don’t always have reliable connectivity, yet crews still need to clock time. The useful part is what happens next: records stay on the device and sync after the connection returns.

Construction payroll often comes with complex compliance requirements, especially on prevailing-wage projects. A time tracker can capture verified labor hours and assign them to the correct project or cost code. Payroll or construction accounting software then combines those records with worker classifications, wage rates, deductions, and other required data.

One number is worth double-checking: if you’ve seen Workyard credited with 100+ payroll and accounting integrations. Its current integration page lists 15+ native integrations and a Developer API for connecting additional systems. I’d use those figures when comparing the platform today.

How did we choose the construction time tracking software for this list?

If I were buying time tracking software for a construction company, I’d start by asking where the current process breaks.

  • Do crews forget to switch projects during the day?
  • Does the office spend too much time repairing timesheets before payroll?

With the main problem identified, the useful features become much easier to separate from the nice-to-have ones.

I used the same basic lens for every product below:

  • First, I looked at how time gets recorded in the field.
  • Then I followed those hours through approval and into payroll or job costing.
  • I also checked pricing and location controls along the way, along with the integrations needed to move the data further.

The Best for labels are deliberately narrow. They show where I think each product fits best, not a best-to-worst ranking.

TimeCamp

Best for: firms that need field and office hours in one system, connected to billing and accounting workflows.

screenshot of hero section of timecamp attendance website for a blog post about time tracking software for construction companies

TimeCamp’s hero puts field and office hours in one timer, tied to billing and accounting. Author’s screenshot, September 2026.

TimeCamp is a horizontal time-and-billing tool with GPS and mobile clock-in. While it’s not a dedicated field-operations or construction-accounting suite, its wide range of core features covers construction essentials, such as estimates and construction job costing. Its main lane is reliable time capture tied to labor-cost and margin reporting. Project and task invoicing sits in the same workflow. Smaller firms can use that setup on its own; larger contractors can connect TimeCamp to their construction accounting stack.

GPS tracking is available across all plans when enabled by an administrator and used with the mobile app. Automatic geofencing is reserved for Enterprise. Crews can also clock in through a shared PIN-based Kiosk.

Office staff can use the Standard Desktop App for automatic time tracking. Predefined keywords can assign recorded activity to projects. Invoicing starts with Starter. Premium adds billable time. Timesheet approvals require Ultimate, which also includes Data Export. The API works across all subscription plans.

The platform connects with common project management tools that are often used by construction crews, including Asana, ClickUp, Jira, monday.com, and Wrike. Tracked time can therefore stay connected to work already organized elsewhere.

Pricing

  • Free (for unlimited users and with unlimited projects)
  • Starter: $3.99 per user per month (annual billing)
  • Premium: $6.99
  • Ultimate: $9.99

14-day free trial available.

Available on

Web, Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android, plus a shared PIN-based Kiosk.

busybusy

Best for: construction crews that prioritize GPS-based field tracking and job-level labor visibility.

a screenshot of hero section of busybusy website

busybusy leads with GPS-first field tracking built around job-level labor visibility. Author’s screenshot, September 2026.

In busybusy, crews switch between jobs and cost codes directly in the app, and managers see who is active on site and review location history. The construction focus also reaches real-time project data, with labor hours and resource information available for job-level reporting.

The Free plan includes unlimited users and GPS time tracking, with job costing and equipment tracking too. Pro adds GPS breadcrumbing and supervisor tools, along with scheduling, photos, and daily sign-offs. Location-based reminders prompt workers to clock in at the right place, and the Required Onsite setting blocks clock-ins outside the configured geofence. Premium expands project reporting and progress tracking, and includes documents and team messaging.

busybusy is easy to place in this list because its strengths sit firmly in the field. I’d just remember the $40 admin license when comparing paid plans. The fixed charge changes the effective per-person cost much more noticeably for a small crew.

Pricing

  • Free: unlimited users, GPS time tracking, job costing, equipment tracking
  • Pro: $9.99 per user per month annually, plus a $40 admin license
  • Premium: $14.99 per user annually

Available on

iOS, Android, and web.

What customers are saying

Ratings (September 2026):

  • G2 4.8/5 (158 reviews)
  • Capterra 4.5/5 (441 reviews)

Ricardo H., a verified current user, highlighted in his December 23, 2025 G2 review:

(…) the simplicity and the ability to use the app remotely.

ClockShark

Best for: contractors that want job scheduling and field time tracking in the same workflow.

a screenshot of a hero section of clockshark website

ClockShark’s homepage pairs field time tracking with crew scheduling in one workflow. Author’s screenshot, September 2026.

ClockShark puts mobile clock-in and job tracking alongside GPS and geofencing. Timesheet approvals sit in the same workflow as drag-and-drop scheduling.

KioskClock turns a shared tablet into an on-site time clock with PIN access or facial-recognition options.

Pricing

  • Standard: $40 per month plus $9 per user
  • Pro: $60 per month plus $11 per user

14-day Pro trial available.

Available on

iOS, Android, and web, plus KioskClock on a shared tablet.

What customers are saying

Ratings (September 2026):

  • G2 4.6/5 (314 reviews)
  • Capterra 4.7/5 (1,911 reviews)

Angela D., a construction CEO, wrote on G2 on March 10, 2026:

(…) employees can clock in and out, adjust their time, add note and pictures.

Her review points to something I’d test before rollout: ClockShark organizes scheduling around individual employees, yet many contractors dispatch established crews.

Build a real crew schedule during the trial and see how much manual adjustment remains before relying on the module for daily dispatch.

Connecteam

Best for: companies that want time tracking connected to wider field operations.

a screenshot of a hero section of clockshark website

Connecteam frames its GPS time clock as one part of a wider field-operations hub. Author’s screenshot, September 2026.

Connecteam covers both mobile and kiosk workflows. The Operations Hub puts a GPS time clock next to scheduling and job management. Forms are built into the same product, with payroll integrations available for moving approved time further.

The all-in-one approach is the selling point, but the headline price doesn’t tell the whole story. Communications and HR & Skills have their own paid tiers. Companies that start combining hubs need to calculate the subscription from the full setup, not from the Operations price alone.

Pricing

  • Basic: $29 per month for the first 30 users (annual billing)
  • Advanced: $49 per month; adds auto clock-out and up to 10 geofence sites
  • Expert: $99 per month; removes the geofence limit

Additional users are charged separately after the first 30.

Available on

iOS, Android, and web, plus a shared kiosk.

What customers are saying

Ratings (September 2026):

  • G2 4.6/5 (3,505 reviews)
  • Capterra 4.6/5 (5,308 reviews)

Vakula C., an HR professional, summarized the appeal on G2 on January 27, 2026:

(…) scheduling, time tracking, and communication are all in one place.

ExakTime (now Arcoro Time)

Best for: construction firms that need time capture tied closely to payroll, prevailing-wage, and certified-payroll workflows.

a screenshot of a hero section of acoro website

Arcoro Time positions its capture around payroll, prevailing-wage, and certified-payroll work. Author’s screenshot, September 2026.

ExakTime is now sold as Arcoro Time. It goes further into construction-specific hardware with dedicated job-site clocks and FaceFront photo verification.

Time Essential includes mobile time and attendance plus GPS location tracking. Perimeter controls and meal-break tracking are included, along with custom forms. Time Professional adds job assignments with scheduling and PTO administration. Time + Payroll connects those records to Arcoro Payroll.

The payroll layer handles prevailing-wage rates and certified-payroll data exports, including WH-347 and LCP Tracker. Construction companies with 200 or more employees can request volume pricing.

The ExakTime-specific Capterra sample is too small for me to put much weight on the average. The product becomes more interesting when prevailing-wage work shapes the time-tracking process. I’d rely on a proper trial before treating the rating as a buying signal.

Pricing

  • Time Essential: $9 per employee per month (annual billing)
  • Time Professional: $12 per employee per month
  • Time + Payroll: $20 per employee per month

Volume pricing available for 200 or more employees.

Available on

iOS, Android, and web, plus rugged dedicated job-site clocks with FaceFront photo verification.

What customers are saying

Ratings need some context (September 2026):

  • G2 rates the wider Arcoro platform at 4.0/5 from 172 reviews.
  • Capterra lists ExakTime separately at 3.6/5 from only 7 reviews.

A verified construction user wrote on G2 on December 18, 2025 that the reporting helps:

(…) calculate our labor expenses and determine how much money each job earned.

QuickBooks Time

Best for: construction companies already running accounting or payroll through QuickBooks.

a screenshot of hero section of quickbooks time subpage

QuickBooks Time lives inside the Intuit ecosystem, where tracked hours feed accounting, payroll, and invoicing directly. Author’s screenshot, September 2026.

QuickBooks Time platform brings field hours into the same accounting ecosystem. The Workforce mobile app captures GPS data when employees are on the clock.

Time Kiosk provides a shared on-site clock-in point. Elite adds geofencing and project estimates-versus-actuals reporting. Intuit requires a QuickBooks Online account to use the time-tracking product.

QuickBooks Time is easiest to justify when QuickBooks is already part of the accounting stack. Starting from scratch changes the calculation because the required accounting subscription becomes part of the real cost.

Pricing

  • Premium: $20 per month plus $10 per user
  • Elite: $40 per month plus $12 per user

Important: QuickBooks Time subscription requires a QuickBooks Online account.

Intuit currently offers introductory discounts on the base subscription, so use the regular rate when comparing ongoing costs. Each base fee includes one admin.

Available on

iOS and Android (Workforce app), and web, plus Time Kiosk on a shared device.

What customers are saying

Ratings (September 2026):

  • G2 4.5/5 (1,447 reviews)
  • Capterra 4.7/5 (7,021 reviews)

Vinod K., a mid-market manager, wrote on G2 on April 16, 2026, that QuickBooks Time:

(…) can feel expensive and somewhat limited compared to other time-tracking tools.

SmartBarrel

Best for: Biometric time tracking with AI insights

a screenshot of a hero section of smartbarrel website

SmartBarrel leads with biometric, hardware-based clock-in built to stop buddy punching on site. Author’s screenshot, September 2026.

SmartBarrel keeps hourly subcontractors in the same workforce workflow as employees. Temporary labor is covered too, with records separated by company and contractor-level time rules available where needed.

Shift approval, automated overtime calculations, and configurable rules for union shifts and breaks are documented. Double-time calculations are covered too. Integrations include Procore, CMiC, and QuickBooks. SmartBarrel shows how automated timesheets reduce manual entry: clock-ins populate records with hours and rounding rules, and break and overtime calculations are added automatically.

AI-powered photo ID helps identify attempted time fraud during clock-ins by checking whether the person clocking in matches the expected worker. Facial verification makes buddy punching harder.

Pricing

SmartBarrel doesn’t provide a pricing page; you should contact their sales team for a tailored quote.

Available on

A proprietary solar/LTE jobsite hardware clock, a shared tablet kiosk, an iOS and Android app, and a web dashboard.

What customers are saying

Ratings (September 2026):

  • G2 n/a (no reviews so far)
  • Capterra 4.9/5 (14 reviews)

Cameron P., a Project Control Analyst, wrote on Capterra on June 30, 2025:

The platform was user-friendly and practical, helping to streamline key job site processes (…).

Workyard

Best for: contractors that need GPS-verified field time connected closely to project and cost-code labor tracking.

a screenshot of a hero section of workyard website

Workyard’s homepage puts GPS-verified field time at the center of construction job costing. Author’s screenshot, September 2026.

Workyard treats GPS as part of the costing workflow, not as another box on a feature page. It records time around jobsites and keeps project assignment close to the original field entry.

Starter covers GPS-verified time and detailed location records, with timesheet reporting and payroll exports. Pro moves deeper into construction operations with project and cost-code workflows. Live labor-cost data becomes part of the same setup, and integrations connect approved time with accounting and payroll systems.

Workyard deserves a serious look when inaccurate location or project assignment starts contaminating job-cost data. Teams that only need a basic mobile timesheet will probably leave much of its field-specific functionality unused.

Pricing

  • Starter: $6 per user per month (annual billing); GPS-verified time, detailed location records, timesheet reporting, payroll exports
  • Pro: adds project and cost-code workflows, live labor-cost data, and integrations (the source doesn’t list a Pro price)

Available on

iOS, Android, and web.

What customers are saying

Ratings (September 2026):

  • G2 4.8/5 (51 reviews)
  • Capterra 4.7/5 (102 reviews)

Tim L., a verified current G2 user, wrote in August 2026:

I like the geo fence and getting automatically clocked in.

Raken

Best for: construction teams that want employee and crew time connected to daily field reporting and production data.

a screenshot of a hero section of raken website

Raken frames employee and crew time as part of the daily field report. Author’s screenshot, September 2026.

Raken takes a noticeably field-first approach. Time sits next to the daily jobsite record as part of the field record itself, and production data follows the same field-first logic.

Supervisors can create time cards for individuals or whole crews, then split hours across cost codes. Mobile time entry works offline and syncs after connectivity returns. Equipment usage can also be attached to a time card when Equipment Tracking is enabled.

Raken fits particularly well when labor hours need to become part of the wider record of what happened on site. A company shopping only for payroll time capture can find a narrower product.

Pricing

  • Basic: Work Logs for company-level manpower
  • Performance: required for Employee Time Cards (individual, payroll-ready time)

Time Clock add-on is required for worker self-clock-in. Free trial available; Raken doesn’t publish a simple public per-user price for this setup.

Available on

iOS (iPhone and iPad), Android, and web.

What customers are saying

Ratings (September 2026):

  • G2 4.6/5 (110 reviews)
  • Capterra 4.6/5 (249 reviews)

Adam T., a verified current G2 user, said in August 2026 that Raken lets his team:

(…) record daily logs and track all employee hours.

Buildertrend

Best for: home builders and remodelers that want labor time inside a larger project and budget workflow.

a screenshot of a hero section of buildertrend website

Buildertrend positions the Time Clock inside a full builder and remodeler project workflow. Author’s screenshot, September 2026.

Buildertrend’s Time Clock connects shifts to jobs and labor cost codes, allowing recorded hours to flow into the project budget. Billable Rates can carry those hours into invoicing and QuickBooks.

One recent limitation is worth noting: Billable Rates apply only to jobs created on or after August 5, 2026.

Buildertrend checks location when an employee clocks in or out and flags entries outside the configured radius. It does not continuously track location throughout the shift. Buildertrend positions the platform around builders managing larger or more complex project workflows, not as a standalone time clock.

I’d look at Buildertrend when Time Clock is one part of a much bigger residential construction workflow. Companies shopping primarily for detailed GPS visibility will find its clock-in/clock-out location model much lighter than continuous field tracking.

Pricing

Quote-based; includes unlimited users and unlimited projects

Available on

iOS, Android, and web.

What customers are saying

Ratings (September 2026):

  • G2 4.3/5 (230 reviews)
  • Capterra 4.5/5 (2,487 reviews)

A verified construction reviewer on Capterra praised the way the platform connects scheduling with budgeting and keeps team-client communication in the same system.

Procore

Best for: larger contractors that want labor time inside a full construction management platform.

a screenshot of a hero section of procore website

Procore’s hero presents timecards as one piece of a complete construction management platform. Author’s screenshot, September 2026.

Procore’s Timecard tool records employee hours against projects and cost codes, and entries can carry billable status before moving into payroll exports. Timesheets sit inside the same platform as Procore’s wider project workflows.

Workers can enter time from mobile devices in the field or through the web. Productivity tools connect recorded labor with production quantities and project budgets.

Procore is easy to misread in a list like this. I wouldn’t buy it simply to replace paper timecards. The case becomes much stronger when the company already needs a full construction system and wants labor records tied directly to project execution. If all you want is cleaner field time, it’s hard to justify all the extra software wrapped around it.

Pricing

  • Custom pricing; the general model includes unlimited users, data storage, and 24/7 support
  • Field Productivity is the exception and is priced based on FTE
  • Final pricing depends on the products selected and the scale of the construction operation

Available on

iOS, Android, and web.

What customers are saying

Ratings (September 2026):

  • G2 4.6/5 (4,308 reviews)
  • Capterra 4.5/5 (2,675 reviews)

One verified Capterra reviewer noted that smaller routine jobs can slow down under the heavier administrative process.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best time tracking app for construction?

Start with the workflow that creates the most rework today. If crews regularly move between sites, project assignment and reliable location controls deserve close attention. Payroll-heavy operations should look closely at how approved hours leave the time tracker and reach accounting.

The best timesheet app for construction is the one that fixes that primary problem without creating another layer of admin work.

How does GPS time tracking work on a job site?

GPS tracking attaches location data to recorded work so managers can check where employees clocked in. Geofencing adds a virtual boundary around the job site. Depending on the software, that boundary blocks clock-ins outside the site or automates them around entry and exit.

Can one app track workers across multiple job sites?

Yes. Set up each location as a separate project or site and have workers change assignments as they move. Supported geofencing workflows automate part of that process.

The important part is the result: recorded labor stays attached to the location where the work happened.

How do you track subcontractor hours?

Give subcontractors a tracking seat when they record their own hours. Report-only access is enough when they only need visibility.

Their time should still land against the correct project and cost code. Decide who approves those records before they reach reconciliation or job costing, and remember to include any paid contractor seats in the software budget.

What is the difference between a time clock app and mobile time tracking?

Shared time clock apps give a crew one clock-in point through a kiosk, tablet, or dedicated device. Mobile tracking puts the app on each worker’s phone, which fits crews moving between sites or starting shifts from different locations.

How does construction time tracking help with job costing?

Job costing becomes more reliable when actual labor hours stay attached to the work that generated them. Apply the relevant labor rate and those hours become a measurable project cost.

Managers can compare labor spending with the budget and catch overruns earlier. My Hours, for example, tracks project budgets, labor costs, and expenses, showing how a general-purpose time tracker can contribute to the costing process.

Does construction time tracking software handle certified payroll?

Some construction workforce and payroll systems generate certified payroll reports directly. Other time trackers capture approved hours and pass them into payroll or accounting software, where worker classifications and prevailing-wage rates are applied before reporting.

Where available, automated compliance features track overtime hours and flag violations against configured rules. Contractors still need to confirm which system owns the compliance workflow and produces the required reports.

Work covered by the Davis-Bacon and Related Acts requires contractors and subcontractors to submit certified payroll information weekly. Lumber automatically generates WH-347 certified payroll reports and supports prevailing-wage calculations for public construction projects. Form WH-347 is an optional reporting format, and each certified payroll requires a signed Statement of Compliance.

Construction time tracking: from field to payroll

Good field data only earns its keep when the office can use it without another cleanup round. Hours should arrive with the right job attached, survive approval intact, and reach payroll or accounting in a form people can actually work with.

  • Automated timesheets eliminate manual entry errors and save hours of manual entry each week. That benefit fades fast when supervisors still spend the end of each pay period correcting records by hand.
  • Construction time tracking software also works best when it integrates smoothly with the accounting software already in use. Approved hours should move into the next stage of the workflow without another manual handoff.
  • Price deserves the same practical treatment. Count the base subscription and paid seats, then add any modules or accounting software required by the workflow.

By the end of a trial, I’d want one clear answer: are managers still repairing timesheets before payroll? If they are, the software hasn’t removed enough manual work from the process.

Whether in-office or field

And from independent contractors to large construction crews, TimeCamp makes sure every work hour lands into timesheets.
